Most Unusual Disney Films
During a meeting with his staff in the 1950s to discuss future projects, one of Walt’s employees said about a script, “We can’t make that, it’s not a typical Disney film!” Walt immediately shot back that as Walt Disney even he didn’t know what a “typical” Disney film was. We all grew up with Disney films, so we instinctively feel like we know what they should be. That’s why it’s so jarring when we come across one that just doesn’t seem to fit the brand.
Here are ten that fall into this unusual category.
Victory through Air Power (1943) directed by James Algar
After America’s entry into World War II, the Disney Studios facility in Burbank, California, was taken over by the military. Walt had to curtail or shut down his work on several planned feature films. He mostly made shorts for the military, but was also inspired after reading a book by a Russian military hero named Alexander de Seversky, called Victory through Air Power. The book advocated the formation of an Allied air force made up of long-range planes to bomb the Axis forces into submission. Disney pushed for a screen adaptation, which contained interesting bits of animation, including a short on the history of aviation. Most of the movie, however, consisted of de Seversky directly addressing the camera in his thick Russian accent. Released in theaters, it was not a box office hit. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British prime minister Winston Churchill, however, were both enthusiastic supporters. De Seversky’s ideas were adopted, and long-range bombers were indeed put into production. This unheralded Disney film actually helped contribute to the Allies’ success in WWII.
