Chapter Twenty

“What if Karrick has killed him?” Jase asked.

Dan sat opposite him on the bed in the guest room, haunted and worried. “What if he has? I’d feel bad for the guy, but he isn’t one of us, is he? If he can’t trust his own…” He shuddered. He hated saying the word. Hated calling Karrick—or Leyton, for that matter—what they really were. It was too freaky. “What are we supposed to do about it, Jase?”

“Help him. I mean what if…what if he isn’t dead? What if he’s just in trouble and we’re all sat here like idiots assuming the worst, and he needs us? What if, right now, he’s just trapped somewhere? Waiting for us to help him and we just…don’t? I sense this but I don’t know what to do about it.”

“God, Jase.” Dan shuffled closer on the bed and took Jase’s hand. “You can’t keep doing this, okay? It’s one thing to try and interpret the Dreams. Even try to anticipate them, see deeper into them, or whatever it is you do, but you can’t take on every single victim like they’re your last family member on Earth. You’ll never save them all, and you’ll make yourself crazy trying.”

“Especially when I fail, you mean?” Jase asked, yanking his hand away.

Dan clenched his jaw around a growl of frustration as he watched Jase rise and start to pace. “Yes,” he said at last. “Especially when you fail. Do you really think that won’t happen? At least some of the time?”

Jase stopped, turned and strode back to Dan, his fists clenched. “I thought you said you were going to try. That you were on my side.” He turned again, and the pain in his eyes was worse than a physical blow. “You promised you would try.”

“I am on your side. I am, Jase, I swear, but one of us has to be realistic here. You have an incredible gift. I don’t understand it. I don’t like the way it tortures you, but I get that you need to try and use it. I only want to make sure we both understand what the reality is. People die. And it’s horrible. More horrible because of how you feel the way it happens. At some point, we have to accept that no matter how hard we try, we won’t be able to save them all.”

“I wish—” Jase heaved in a deep breath. “That sucks.”

Letting go a sigh of relief, Dan got up and went to him, standing behind him and placing a hand on each of his biceps. “I know. And I’m sorry.”

“It’s not your fault.”

Jase shuddered slightly and sank back until Dan was holding most of his weight. The trust inherent in the way his lover closed his eyes and put all of himself into Dan’s hands like that left his heart jittering.

“And it’s not yours, either,” Dan said. “The sooner you realize that, the better.”

“There is something I can do.”

The hesitant edge to Jase’s voice put Dan on alert. He tightened his fingers around Jase’s arms.
