CANDICE

I need the biggest cup of coffee imaginable. We hardly got any rest last night, only falling as sleep when the sky started to lighten. I didn’t want to wake Colt, so I wrote him a note and headed downstairs to finish my Battenberg cake. I was concentrating so hard on getting everything just right, I didn’t hear Ember come into the kitchen. I nearly tore the marzipan when as I was laying it over the cake.

“Have you been here all night?” She asks.

“Well, technically,” I mumble.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Good morning.” Colt says, pulling his shirt over his head as he walks into the kitchen but stopping in his tracks when he sees Ember standing there.

“Oh, I get it now.” She gives me a smile like she’s the cat that caught the canary. “Forget I even asked.”

Colt gives her a sheepish grin as she passes him and heads out to the front of the shop. I’d forgot I’d asked her here to help me transport my submissions to the high school where the competition is being held. She also planned on closing down the bakery for the day, so she could be my emotional support.

Normally my Gran would be my cheerleader in the audience of what activity was participating in. But when she passed away, there was a hole inside me that never seemed to want to fill until I met Ember. And now that Colt is in my life, another part of that hole is filling up too.

“Did you need any help carrying anything out to your car?” he asks.

The cookies and cupcakes have already been packed up, but I don’t want them sitting in the car in case the weather is going to mess with them.

“I’m still finishing up the final touches on the cake,” I tell him. “And Ember came in to help me transport everything. She’s got a lot of experience moving baked good and not messing them up in transit.”

Colt looks around like he’s trying to find something else to do.

“Are you going to open the book store today?”

“Nah, most of the town will be at the baking contest. Plus, I don’t want to miss out and watching you win the big prize.”

“Don’t jinx me!” I point at him and spin around looking for something wood in this stainless-steel kitchen. I run over to the old cabinets against the wall that Ember didn’t replace because she wanted to keep a piece of the old place when she remodeled.

“Knock. On. Wood.” I say each syllable with a knock.

“Do you really think that works?” Colt chuckles but stops when I don’t even crack a smile.

“Do you want to mess with my superstitious ass today?” I ask.

He shakes his head no.

“Good, then I need you to head over to the high school and save Ember a seat. That way we have one less reason to rush.”

Colt steps forward towards me. “Can I give you a good luck kiss?”

I lean across the island counter and he does the same.
