This Time

WITH HARDCORE HEAVY metal streaming through his ears, Tobey held the free weights up, balancing them before starting his set. The weights were heavier than he normally used but the way he was feeling, he would have pressed a Buick and not have felt it. Niveah was avoiding his calls; that much was obvious, but he sure as hell was not going to let this go even if he had to fight her to do it.

He rested between sets, eyeing the punching bag lustily. He would hit that when he was done here.

Leaning back on the bench, the weights centered, he steadied himself again. Tobey Fine had always convinced himself that he was prepared for anything.

He was about to get tested.

“Spot you,” a female voice declared. He recognized it almost instantly. He quickly brought his arms back down and dropped the weights heavily on the padded floor.

“What are you doing here?” he asked, annoyed, roughly pulling out his ear buds. “How the hell did you get access?”

“Well, hello to you too, Tobey,”

Natalie Baumgartner was a former Medusa cheerleader turned actress he’d been stupid enough to get involved with a couple of years ago. When she left the franchise it was with expectations of making it big as an action film star. She was five eight, had studied mixed martial arts for years, with a tight body, a combination that made some producers salivate. But her first movie hadn’t done too well and the others were tepid at best.

He got up quickly from the bench.

“I mean it, Natalie. How the hell did you get in?”

Natalie stepped back, smiling. Tobey was still mad at her. That was a good sign.

“I’m back for a promo gig if you must know. I’m cheering at the inaugural game and we’re working on some promo since I’m up for a big movie role.”

Tobey rolled his eyes. “Great,” he mumbled sarcastically. Tobey picked up the weights he dropped and put them back on the rack.

“What? Leaving so soon?” Natalie smirked, crossing her arms over her chest, amused that she still had that much of an effect on Tobey.

“Do what you want just don’t bother me, all right?” He swiveled on his heel and left her standing there.

He straddled the bench in the locker room and called Niveah again. He had held back yesterday thinking she needed some time, but he caved in the evening. This morning she wasn’t at the office and Jake wasn’t sure where she was since she was usually the first in, especially on a Monday. Niveah was in the wind.

Just as he growled at his phone, Blake came in, whistling. He didn’t know Blake even knew how to whistle.

“You look happy,” Tobey tartly commented. “I’m glad one of us is.”

Blake stopped whistling and looked at his friend, who was the picture of misery.

Niveah.

“What the hell happened to you?” Blake asked. “I thought you two were getting along great, romantic...”

“We were. When I took her to RenFest on Saturday, we were having such a great time.
