I slouch in the plush reading chair near the bedroom window, listening to the tinkling sounds of the shower escape the closed bathroom door. My eyes are closed, and I work on deep breaths in, slow breaths out. I try not to allow my brain to go down an anxiety-filled rabbit hole of "what-if" thoughts. What Seamus said, it could be nothing, a coincidence.

Unfortunately, I've never believed in coincidences.

What a goddamn mess.

I had to stop grilling the kid, though, had to quit making him repeat everything slower and with more detail. The middle of the night ain't the time to give him the third degree. Seamus needs to get some sleep, and I…

Well, I have an angry Scot to contend with.

I open my eyes and inhale until my stomach expands. Gods, the room smells like Luca. Like the forest after a rainstorm mixed with spicy cloves. Earthy, clean, and a scent I've become addicted to. I fight the urge to slip on one of his shirts to have his scent next to my skin. Hell, wearing his clothes might be the closest I get near him after what I pulled tonight.

I unlace my boots and toss them too hard into the opened walk-in closet. My socks follow them in, and I bury my feet into the plush carpet, trying to find comfort there. What the hell am I going to say to him? Sorry I threw myself on you in an alley? Sorry I used your body to expel the rage rushing through my veins?

I'm not sorry, though, not entirely. Yeah, I regret we happened to be at that particular spot when the urge to touch him overwhelmed me. Nothing else. I still want him. With every cell in my body, I still want his hands on me. His lips. I don't need anger as a catapult to touch him. Any residual apprehension about Bonding with Luca dissolved in the alley.

He felt so good, and I felt so good. Guilt should burn my face when my mind goes back into that alley. It's not guilt making my skin hot right now.

"I'm an idiot," I whisper. The dim lamp on the nightstand flickers as if agreeing with me.

I spot my phone next to the lamp and grab it to stare at the screen. Before I can stop myself, I tap out a text to Ben.

Me: I fucked things up with Luca

Three little bubbles pop up immediately as he types out a reply.

Ben: Then fix it

Me: I don't know if I can

Ben: I have faith in your abilities of persuasion

It should be strange, having this conversation with Ben, but it isn't. It's perfectly right, and his words do give me some confidence.

Me: Have I mentioned how much I love you?

Ben: Once or twice. Good luck, soldier

I smile as I type out a "thanks" and set my phone back on the table. Gods, I fucking miss him.

When the shower stops, so does my heart. Please don't let Luca turn me away. Don't let him be the Luca who kept a polite distance.
