ALEXA GLANCED at herself in the Camry’s rearview mirror and shrieked in her mind. Letting the scream out would have finished melting what was left of her brain.Okay, a scary-eyed, bride-of-Frankenstein-haired woman with a head swaddled in cotton gauze might attract a bit of undue attention in a quaint, conservative mountain village. She closed her eyes and rested her forehead against the steering wheel. The twenty-minute drive from downtown Atlanta to historic Stone Mountain felt as if it had taken hours.

She did, slowly, wincing at the blast of winter sunlight awaiting her. She carefully slipped the Dynasty-esque sunglasses she’d found in the console between the front seats back on, then gingerly donned the Bahamas Baby straw hat that had been sitting in the passenger seat—probably souvenirs abandoned by one of Rick’s girlfriends after a weekend quickie to Paradise Island.

Cadaver eyes and post-coma coif neutralized, the next trick was ditching the car where it wouldn’t draw attention, then somehow making it up the stairs that led to the apartment even Rick didn’t know about.

Fifteen minutes, tops.

You can do this.

You can do anything.

Those had been her mother’s last words to her, as she’d assured Alexa she could move on from losing her. The last words of a brave woman, who had been so certain her daughter would follow in her footsteps.

Instead, Alexa was weak and sick and needing to be back at the hospital with Robert holding her hand and standing between her and what she had to do next. She’d never felt less like the hero her mother had thought she could be.
