Chapter Nine

“My…my deepest sympathies, Cooper.” Baylor’s low voice laden with sorrow broke through the heavy silence.

Now he decides to use my name? Cooper had no idea why that was the thought he latched onto at the moment except that maybe he couldn’t deal with what he was witnessing. Nicky had always been a part of his life, for longer than he could remember, and now he was gone.

Cooper sank to his knees, his legs no longer able to hold him up. If there had been an airlock in the room, he would have walked right out through it and let the vastness of space take away the sucking wound in his chest where his heart used to be.

This just couldn’t be happening. He had just claimed Nicky, shared the deepest parts of his soul with the man. He couldn’t be gone. Cooper wouldn’t survive without him. Loving and protecting Nicky was his sole purpose in life.

Cooper tried to drag a breath of air into his lungs but nothing was getting past the lump in his throat. The lack of oxygen quickly took its toll, spots dancing in front of his eyes. Cooper leaned forward, resting his weight on one of his hands as the other one covered his mouth as his stomach rolled and clenched.

He just wasn’t going to survive this.

Cooper reached for the gun at his hip. Without Nicky, he— “Nicky?” Cooper dropped his pistol and pressed his hands to his temple. The incredible pressure built until he thought his head was going to explode. The pain was excruciating as though his skull was being crushed in a vise grip.

But he felt Nicky. He felt him in his soul. There was no mistaking the warmth that filled him from the inside out. It was the same feeling he had whenever Nicky was near. It told him that the explosion he just witnessed might not be all of the story. He needed to trust his gut and look for what he hadn’t seen.

Cooper jumped up and ran to the window again. “Baylor!”

“Yes?”

“Is there a way to see the explosion?” He glanced back at the man, frowning at the slump of Baylor’s shoulder. “I need to see the explosion again.”

“Sire, please, you—”

“Show me the damn explosion!”

Baylor stiffened before reaching over and tapping at the computer console. The viewing screen suddenly had a view of the flagship. Cooper’s throat thickened with dread as he watched the explosion on the screen.

“Again.”

“Sire—”

“Again!” Cooper shouted.

The screen showed the explosion again, and then again and again, the graphic scene playing out in vivid color. It was truly horrifying to watch the ship explode and know that so many people had just lost their lives. The battle cruiser had been fully manned.

“Cooper, maybe this isn’t such a good idea,” Baylor said. “While the weapons system is totally shot, I’m pretty sure we can get this ship up and running enough to get to Venus. Once we land, we can—”

“There!” Cooper tapped the screen when he saw what he had been looking for.
