The logical voice in Loganâs head told him this was a bad idea. He was undercover and while Mia wasnât exactly a suspect, she wasnât totally clear either. She pointed him to where guest spots were located and he parked. He considered all the ways this could go bad:
She might be involved in the forgeries.
But she just nailed Bishop and didnât back down. If she was in on it, she wouldâve lied or he wouldâve called her out.
She might be running some other scam.
To what end? Sheâs been handed a raw deal with her father. Sheâs led a law-abiding life.
You could fall for her. At some point sheâll realize youâve been lying to her and sheâs completely out of your league.
Mia opened her door to get out and glanced at him over her shoulder with that teasing crooked grin and he made his decision.
Itâs worth the risk.
He followed Mia into the building and then the elevator. Once the doors swished closed, he slid a hand around her hip and pulled her close, her back to his front. He brushed her hair from her neck and planted an openmouthed kiss at the juncture between her neck and shoulder. She gave a little shudder and leaned against him. The doors reopened and she straightened away from him.
She unlocked the door and set her keys and purse on a side table. âWhat would you like to drink?â
âUh, whatever you have is fine.â He took in his surroundings. Never before had anything so blatantly smacked him as much as this décor did. He was almost afraid to touch anything. A huge marble fireplace took up most of one wall. In front of it was a leather couch that probably cost a month of his salary. Everything was pristine and perfect.
A moment later, Mia was standing in front of him with a glass of whiskey. âSomething wrong?â
âNo.â He accepted the glass and took a sip. The smooth burn was another reminder of how far out of his league she was. His brain scrambled to keep up. Heâd known she had money. Even after her father ran and the government seized assets, Mia had an inheritance in trust from her motherâs side of the family.
âAre you sure? If you donât want this, itâs okay. It can be just two friends sharing a drink.â
Damn. âItâs just that... I knew you had money, but this place is amazing. I guess I didnât realize how rich you are.â
âIs my wealth an issue?â
He knew it shouldnât be. Logically. âYou know I donât come from money, right? Iâm not part of your world. Iâm a visitor that most people will overlook.â
She reached up and stroked his cheek. âThen letâs enjoy your visit. One of the things I like best about you is that youâre not from my world. You have no personal feelings about my last nameâyouâre not using it to get ahead or as a weapon against me. And right now, thatâs enough.â
It probably wouldnât be enough for long.
