Chapter Thirty-three:

Leo

Funny how I remembered all sorts of weird details. The dream had scared the living crap out of me. Mainly because it was so real.

The worst part was that it made me realize that I wasn’t ready to tackle anything on my own. Not when it came to catching a killer. I’d make the same kinds of careless mistakes I did when I first started WoW.

My characters got killed. Obliterated. You didn’t think, Leo. Wrong spells…. Weak defenses…. Stupid moves…. I had to create new characters. Some of those were destroyed, too. You won’t make the same mistakes. You learned from them. Trust yourself.

Then, why was I so scared?

I sat up and took a deep breath before I started talking. My dad grabbed the chair from the desk and Detective Miller stood right behind him. Skipper circled around and found a spot in the corner of the room where he laid down.

It was the weirdest thing. I couldn’t remember the last time I was lying in bed with people all around me. Maybe when I was little. Maybe when someone was reading me a bedtime story. This time, it was my story to tell and it was a horror story.

“I was sitting in a car and heard a door slam behind me. I got out to look around when these weird headlights from another car lit up a huge circle in front of me. I never had a chance to turn around. Someone slid their arm around my chest and I tried to get away. All I could see was the long sleeve of a blue jacket and the guy’s hand. I kept trying to push it off of me. My fingers could actually feel the metal button on the sleeve. No matter how hard I pushed, I couldn’t break free. All I could see was the stupid metal button as my chest got tighter and tighter. I don’t remember screaming, but I must have.

“The last thing I remembered before waking up was trying to pull the button off of the sleeve. I couldn’t. The guys’ grip was like granite. I was choking. Couldn’t catch my breath. Then I woke up.”

My dad leaned in and touched my arm. “It’s okay, Leo. You’re okay. Just a bad dream. Do you want a glass of water or anything?”

“No,” I said. “I’m fine.”

“Investigator Miller and I will let you get some sleep. We’ll be right downstairs if you need anything. From the looks of things, Skipper isn’t about to budge either. He’s made himself at home in the corner. Try to get some sleep.”

I nodded and turned on my side as my dad reached to shut the lamp. As I tossed the blanket over my shoulder, something small bounced off and panged on the hardwood floor. I figured it was a coin from the loose change that usually finds itself in my pockets. I lifted my head to see Investigator Miller bending down to pick up whatever had fallen.

“I’m turning on the overhead light,” he said.
