Chapter Twenty-Two

The door flew open, and Carson burst into the bedroom, his eyes wide and frantic, holding a gun in his hand. At the sight of it, I screamed. I didn’t know how I ended up in the bedroom, but greater power had disturbed me, and I paced in agitation and distress.

“What the hell happened?” he asked. “What’s wrong? Why are you screaming? Is someone here?”

There was, but how to put it into words without sounding insane?

“Wh—why...why... you have a... gun...” I said, surprised I could talk.

He glanced down at his hand. “I keep it for safety. Is someone here?”

I exploded into tears, and Carson rushed toward me and put his arms around me.

“My god, you’re trembling. What the fuck?”

I continued to cry, shaking my head.

His face softened. “It’s all right, my love. I’ll keep you safe.”

But could he keep me safe? Taira wasn’t happy with me being here. I saw it in her face. She hated me. Did the dead come back and watch the living? I asked myself. Did she come here to this bedroom and watch Carson and me? I pulled him away and sat on the bed. Carson watched me, concerned and frightened.

“I saw her, Carson. I saw her.”

“Who?”

“I saw her as clear as I see you now.”

“For fuck’s sake, you’re not making any sense. Who did you see?”

“Your wife!”

“But you are my wife.”

“No!” I protested. “Not me. Your other wife. The one before me. Taira!”

I couldn’t explain how he looked at me in an analyzing manner, working out if I was insane or not. I sounded crazy.

“I can’t stay here,” I said. The panic made my heart rate beat into speed. “I can’t be in this house. It’s too much.”

“Okay, calm down,” Carson said.

“I don’t want to stay here!” I repeated.

I marched out of the bedroom and through the corridor. The house was dark and eerie. Shadows were everywhere, looking real and grotesque. Carson was after me calling my name, but I wasn’t listening. All I could see were those eyes, and my God, she was angry. How much she despised seeing us together. The walk downstairs to the front door was a nightmare, and my heart was pounding hard and fast against my chest. I reached for the keys of the Range Rover and went to the door out to the night. The air gave me solace, hugging my senses. I scattered toward the car, and Carson came out of the house, still holding the gun. The sight of it made me cringe. I wanted him to put it away.

“Goddamn it,” he grumbled. “Where are you going?”

“I’m not staying in there,” I said, pointing at the house.

Carson sighed and threw his head back, thinking. “All right, I can find a hotel for us to stay the night, but you need to get changed.”

I forgot I was still in my bathrobe.

“I’ll get you something to wear,” he said, turning and going back into the house.

I got in the car and waited, watching the house. The lights came on.
