Chapter 19
âFatboy, I just want to be trusted.â
âI trust you Fatboy.â
âI donât mean you, you plonker. I want a woman who believes in me, in my loyalty.â
âOk...... Why?â
âWhen I try to work out what went wrong with my marriages, the one thing they have in common, is lack of trust.â
âIs that your fault?â
âWhy should it be my fault?â
âCos you made âem feel that way, you bozo?â
âNah, thatâs crazy! I actually commit fully, absolutely, which is a lot more than most blokes do. The thing is Tim, Iâm not faithful because Iâm afraid of being caught out, or because Iâm being monitored, or controlled, or restricted, or interrogated, or suspected, or anything like that. Iâm faithful because I want to be, I choose to be. Does that make sense?â
âYeah, I suppose so bruv.â
âThatâs why Iâm so frustrated, and unsettled. I feel misjudged. Iâve never been remotely interested in having an affair or a one-night-stand, but obviously, there is a flip side.â
âWhich is?â
âThat I expect to be trusted, just like I trust them, but not everyone can do that. For me, being committed doesnât mean that you canât talk to other women, or to be friendly with them. Iâm a chatterbox. I like talking to people, especially women. The bit I canât abide is the constant irrational interpretation of innocent stuff as evidence of guilty intention. A suspicion that youâre up to no good, that youâre always hankering for a bit of extra. I want to be trusted. I deserve to be trusted, but I wonât be trussed up like a mummy.â
âSo what you sayinâ? If you speak to another woman, the missus presumes you want to rip her knickers off, bend her over, and do her from behind?â
âExactly! Why are they like that?â
âBecause most blokes are like that.â
âSo we all have to be tarred with the same brush?â
âYep. As far as theyâre concerned youâre a bloke, and you think through your dick.â
Pablo mused thoughtfully.
âItâs just so unfair and sad. Love canât be complete without trust. I always trusted both of them, absolutely, no questions asked, and that enabled me to love them absolutely.â
âYeah, but bro, you were wrong about Delilah. She was doing a bloke for two years behind your back.â
âThereâs no need to bring facts into this Fatboy. Iâm transcending into the sublime here, exploring matters of the heart. Attitude. Morals. Integrity. Ethics, not brutal, unavoidable, hard-nosed facts.â
âOk bruv. Sorry. I went off point there.â
âAnyway, I was right for thirty years.â
He hesitated, thinking, then resumed..
âAt least, I believe that I was, and that helped me love her absolutely, even when she was doing another guy.â
