CHAPTER 12

ASH

Ash sipped his coffee, seated on the back porch of the house. He and Jason, who was seated to his right, said nothing as they gazed out into the woods.

“You know,” said Ash. “This is kinda actually fucking peaceful.”

“Peaceful?” asked Jason, surprise in his voice. “Since when are you into ‘peaceful?’”

“Now, I didn’t say I was into peaceful. More like, just saying what it is.”

“Right. But you said it in an approving sort of way, like you were liking it. You thinking of retiring or something? Maybe getting some little pad outside of LA and spending the rest of your days golfing or whatever the fuck it is over-the-hill shifters do.”

Ash let out a loud laugh, one that carried over the back stretch of the house’s property, getting the attention of a few clan members off in the distance. They shot an annoyed look in the brothers’ direction, letting them know without words that they didn’t care for their new “guests.”

“Not even close to any of that shit,” said Ash. “I don’t know about you, J, but I’m not planning on ‘resting’ until we’re on top of the food chain.”

“Us three?” asked Jason.

“Sure,” said Ash. “Why the hell not?”

“Because,” said Jason, “there’s only so much shit the three of us can do. You want to be on top? You want to have more power than just being mercenaries for hire?”

“Sure,” said Ash. “Who doesn’t want more power.”

Jason sipped his coffee, staring off into the woods. Ash could tell there was something on his mind. And when the smirk formed, Ash had a good idea what it was.

“Hell no,” said Ash. “Hell no.”

“Ash,” said Jason, setting down his mug. “We’ve been over this a million fucking times. You want to have more power, we’re not going to be able to do it with just the three of us.”

“And why the hell not? Way I see it, we can keep doing work, keep building our fortune. We’re worth millions now, J. We invest that shit and we can turn it into billions. And when it’s billions, no one’s going to dare fucking touch us.”

“What, you want to hire mercs to enforce our power? What happens when those mercs decide it’ll be easier to just kill us and take what we have instead of getting paid out? What then?”

“Then...we kill the fucking mercs and send a message.”

“And what happens when the other shifters in LA start getting wise that we’re after more than just money, that we’re going for territory, real power.”

“We...hire more mercs.”

“The same mercs we just killed to ‘send a message?’”

Ash scowled, knowing where Jason was going with this.

“Not going to happen,” said Ash. “I know what you’re thinking, and it isn’t going to happen.”

“If you’re not going to say it, then I am,” said Jason. “If we’re going to have real power, we’re going to need to cut this merc shit out. We’re going to need to become a pack again.”

Ash shook his head.

“We tried that. And we know how well it worked out for us—we’re the only damn members left.
