Jeffrey was back in his apartment stroking Zeke and wondering what to do next when the buzzer from the door downstairs sounded.
“Hello?”
“Hallo, Jeffrey.”
“Inge! Come on up!”
He buzzed her in and quickly looked around to see if he could make the apartment more welcoming. He took the books off the living room couch and piled the dishes from the counter in the sink. That was all he had time for before she came in.
Zeke was first to greet her, with a wagging tail that betrayed his hope that she might have brought something for him. Sure enough, she reached into her purse and pulled out a chewy bone that he took quietly off to a corner of the living room.
“What, and nothing for me?” Jeffrey asked sarcastically.
“Hi Jeffrey.” She stepped towards him and gave him a soft kiss on the left cheek. Just one.
“Hey,” he said, touching her arm as he looked at her face.
She meant to convey warmth, but she looked away. She was troubled by something, but Jeffrey was clueless as to what it might be.
“So,” he said as she walked past him into the living room, “you were in the neighborhood, and decided to drop by.”
“I didn’t think I needed a reason.”
“You don’t. I’m just a little surprised. I sort of hoped you’d stick around after we made our drug bust, but you ran out of here like a nun at a rave…”
“Like a what?”
“Fast…”
“Oh. I guess I got a little scared.”
He stepped towards her. She was still wearing a black beret, which he took off. Her hair fell in curls to either side of her high cheeks.
“There’s a lot to be scared about. But I thought we were in this together.”
“We are. We are. That’s why I came by tonight. I wanted to tell you that.”
“Just that?”
She didn’t answer. She did step forward and kiss him squarely on the lips, and ran her fingers through his hair.
She seemed nervous, but so was Jeffrey, as she kissed him again and again. She took off her coat, and somehow decided not to stop there. Still kissing Jeffrey, she unzipped and pulled off each of her calf-length boots, and unwrapped her scarf from her neck. She was wearing a plush green sweater and black pants that unzipped in the back.
She hadn’t stopped kissing Jeffrey. He put his hand on the zipper of the pants and slowly pulled it downwards, letting his right hand stroke her buttocks as he did so. He slid both of his hands into her pants and slowly edged them down her legs, around her ample hips. He stroked both of her legs and gripped the pants more firmly, pulling them down around her ankles. He unbuttoned his own jeans and let them fall to the floor, letting his naked knees slowly touch her legs. Running his hands into her panties, he ran his fingers back and forth across their bottom, pulling down slowly and letting the top of his hand brush against her very slightly.
