‘Caroline, my sister, has asked us to go to this charity event. I suppose the guests will be pretty poor because she says “outfits” are provided. The charity had some initials, like I saw outside Greg’s, so the guests maybe are the starving too.’

‘Do we have to go to meet all these poor, naked people?’ said Ted.

‘Yes,’ Archie said. ‘We must keep in with Caroline. I owe her a lot of money. You must come with me, batman.’

‘I’ll go in an evening dress to distinguish myself from the naked poor, and you go in that boiler suit, which made such a hit at the Conservative Garden Party which Boris Johnson attended. That will please Caroline.’

‘Anyway if we have to go naked, we will have the sandwich advertisement board, to cover our fronts,’ said Ted, hopefully.

‘Maybe,’ said Archie.

They went to City Hall in a taxi for which Caroline had paid in advance.

They were ushered into a room with a notice —

The room was filled with dresses and skirts of all sizes, and underwear copied from the Moulin Rouge.

‘The sandwiches with bacon and tomato from Greg’s,’ Archie said. ‘They are the sponsors.’

Archie had not taken off his dinner jacket. A slim, dark-haired lady approached him; the whore’s face was very made up. To Archie, she looked like a prostitute.

‘How much are the sandwiches?’ he said, winking gamely.

‘Oh, we don’t do that here’, she said, ‘it’s one on one.’

Archie did not know what to say. His beautiful partner led him on to the dance floor.

Archie tried to dance. A man pushed in with shorts and braces.

‘Fred’s my boyfriend,’ he said. Archie’s date took off his shirt and bra.

He looked for Ted to ask him if he knew what was going on.

He was thwarted when he saw Ted in his boiler suit, with SLAVE written on the back in felt-tip pen. He was dancing with a tall, blond willowy man, who was asking him about his wages. Then Archie realised, this was his sister Caroline, in drag. She was trying to get Ted away from him with talk of wages.

Archie grabbed Ted and hauled him off.

‘We’re going to Gregg’s for a BLT Trans sexual sandwich.’
