Chapter Six

What's funny is that I met Rob online, too. Our firm handled a case for him. Normally, he would have gone to our New York office but because the action was against a Philadelphia resident, we had jurisdiction and got the case instead. Rob and I struck up an immediate friendship by e-mail that was almost cosmic, liking the same music, books, and more importantly, both being frustrated artists. I'm also a food freak, so I was fascinated by the fact that he was a master chef and owned his own restaurant in New York City.

And unlike my dealings with Richard, Rob and I never ventured into the erotic. From the very beginning of our relationship, he told me all about his new girlfriend Marianne and how he felt he'd finally met "The One". At first, I led him to believe that I was happily married so that he wouldn't feel threatened or worse, think I was on the make, looking for love in cyber world, but little by little, as a really warm and special friendship grew between us, I began to confide in him about my unhappiness and he became a coach for me to leave. He had a bad first marriage himself and was so ecstatic over Marianne that he was one of the few people I respected enough to share my feelings and consider his advice.

And in a way, I helped him, too. He was an artist who regretted not spending more time painting. I was like his cyber cheerleader, and when he took digital photographs of some of his work and sent them to me, I was amazed at his talent and told him so. Every time I talked to him online, I goaded him by asking if he'd worked on anything new and could I see it. He in turn would ask if he could see my stuff and if I wanted to go back to my art, too. But I always demurred.

"Wouldn't it be fantastic," he said. "If you could just change your entire life? Quit the job you hate, leave the man you no longer love…just walk away?"

"Don't I wish. But I have children."

"They're not kids anymore—you've said so yourself. Your one son is in his first year of college, your other son starts in September. Wouldn't that be the best time to start your life, too?"

"Oh, yeah. It's what I want more than anything. At least I think so. I'm just so fucking confused. But in reality—I just don't know if I can pull it off."

"You can and you should," he'd said.

And I knew he was right. I just wish there was a way he could somehow help me accomplish that.

So I really couldn't wait to meet him in person. He was also the only one I'd told about these planned three days with Richard. He was my safety net, in case I ended up in a body bag, identified by my dental records. Funny. Up until this afternoon when
