Chapter Eight

David spent the next two days making sure to avoid his sister, who seemed quite intent on railing at him whenever she could for his foolishness, his arrogance, his stubbornness and his hardness of heart. He had made every effort to remove himself from her presence, feeling too much the burden of guilt that lay upon his shoulders.

He could not get Lady Olivia from his mind, turning over the look he had seen in her eyes when he had finally realized that she was not the woman he thought her to be.

And he had truly thought the worst of her.

Even now, shame nipped at his heels as he made his way into Lord Cartwright’s home, stopping to greet his host and his wife and thanking them profusely for the invitation to their card party.

The drawing room was fairly busy already, and Lord Cartwright assured him that the musical room next to the drawing room was also in use for guests, should he wish to go there. Thanking him again, David walked a little further into the room, quite aware that cards were the last thing he was thinking about.

No, he was here to talk to whomever he could about Lord Hastleway. He had not been idle ever since Lady Olivia’s visit, for he had sent for his steward almost at once, instructing him to find out what he could about the gentleman. His steward, who was used to nothing more than dealing with the accounts during the time David was in London, had struggled to hide his surprise but had agreed to do what David asked of him without question. In fact, there had almost been a lightness to the man’s steps, which had told David that he was rather looking forward to such a change in his daily habits. The steward would not report back to him until the morning, and thereafter, David was due to meet with Lady Olivia and Lady Havisham.

That meant that his evening would be spent, as he had spent it last evening, finding out what he could about Lord Hastleway. Yesterday evening had been rather disappointing, for David had gone to Whites in order to talk to some of the patrons there, in the hope that liquor might loosen their tongues. However, what he had not realized was that most gentlemen there were much too in their cups to be of much use. Of course, some had made comments as regards Lord Hastleway’s behavior and those comments had burned into David’s mind, bringing him a modicum of concern.

All he had to do was talk to a few more gentlemen this evening, speak to his steward come the morning and then make his decision.

“Good evening, Lord Winchester!”

Smiling at one of his acquaintances, Lord Wesley, David inclined his head. “Good evening, Wesley. How are you this evening?”

“Very good, very good,” Wesley replied, helping himself to a glass held out by one of the footmen. “Drink, old man?”

Accepting the glass from him, David nodded his thanks
