Chapter 8

Cullen gritted his teeth as he climbed out of the truck. He'd managed to deflect Nash's question by getting the man to talk about the clean up at The Watering Hole. What had Nash seen in his eyes to make him ask that question?

Christ! He hurt in every atom of his body, and he'd never felt that way before. Maybe that was why he'd never challenged anyone--because subconsciously, he knew how painful the whole fucking thing would be.

By the morning, his wounds would be pretty much healed, especially if he could sneak out and shift. In his wolf form, his injuries tended to get better quicker.

He leaned against the post of his porch, while Nash unlocked the front door. Cullen started stripping the minute they stepped inside. He left a trail of clothes down the hallway into his bathroom.

"I'm going out and grabbing my bag. I'll be back in here to look at your wounds in a minute. Don't get in the shower until I'm sure you don't need stitches or something," Nash said from where he stood near the door.

"If I do, are you going to perform the surgery?"

Cullen studied his reflection in the mirror over the sink. If he'd had any serious wounds, they had started to heal while he went and got Nash. He'd declined any kind of medical care from Robinson's old pack. It wasn't that he thought they would try to kill him because they were all followers. Not one of them was going to challenge him for Alpha of the pack.

None of them knew what to do with a needle if it didn't involve injecting some kind of drug into their veins. He didn't trust them to patch him up either.

"Jesus Christ!"

He met Nash's shocked gaze in the mirror. Cullen could only imagine what his back looked like. Not as bad as his stomach, though. Robinson had gotten in several slashes with his hind legs during their fight.

"It looks like you got mauled by a wolf. Did Robinson have more of those animals around?"

Nash laid his hand on Cullen's back, and Cullen shuddered at his touch. His body was absorbing the pain while healing, and exhaustion washed over him. He let his head drop forward, giving Nash a better look at his body.

"No. It wasn't the dogs, but I'm not in any condition to explain at the moment."

"Hush. It's all right. I'll be quick and then you can take a shower. Do you want something to eat before you go to bed?"

Cullen nodded. His wolf needed to eat because of the energy he'd expended during the fight. "I have a couple of steaks in the fridge. If you want, you can heat them up slightly. I like my meat rare."

"Okay."

He allowed Nash to turn him enough for the light to hit his back. Nash's soft hiss told Cullen that his wounds hadn't healed as fast as he thought. It was because he needed to shift and let whatever kind of magic that was inside him heal the rest of them.
