CHAPTER TEN
THE ODD THING was Paul really didnât want her to go, and he wasnât sure why.
Heâd lived in mud huts and even caves with other people and had ended up forging a bond because of the hard times they had experienced together. He and Rosemary had been through a few material hardships together in the past week and a half that might have started that particular ball rolling. But he didnât think it was their intimate living situation that drew him to her, not really.
On the other hand, he might be reluctant to let her go because of the sensual awareness that quivered between them now. Could it be that, on some level of his convoluted ego, he still hoped to woo her into his bed?
No, he didnât really think it was that. He hadnât been obsessed with passion since he was in his early twenties. Heâd like to think heâd matured a little since those days.
So what was it? Maybe it was really something simple. Maybe he just plain liked her. Could that really be it?
Of course, their quarters were shrinking all the time. Now the walls were down between them and at night they could hear each other breathe. Paul lay awake for an hour that first night, listening to her and thinking about how companionable it was to be this close. And then he began to wonder what she thought of it, and the rosy glow dimmed a bit.
Rosemary had suggested that one or even both of them should move to Mrs. Tibbsâs place, now that it was vacant. Paul had quickly explained that the interior would be gutted the very next day and they were better off staying where they were.
He knew she wished this entire situation would go away, that she could be back in her precious apartment again, just as it had been before he entered her life. But that wasnât going to happen. Still, he didnât want her to be any more uncomfortable than she had to be.
The one thing he worried about with the walls down were the nightmares. He didnât want to cry out in the night and wake her. The dreams had been fading lately. Heâd been hopeful that they would disappear once he got back into some semblance of normal life, and it seemed to be working. But remnants still lingered.
Heâd never been one to have nightmares in the past. Heâd never even noticed his dreams much. It had only been in the past year in Bosnia, and then in Chechnya, that heâd begun to feel himself falling down into a long black pit as he fell asleep at night. And after that night with the guns firing overhead, that night heâd been carrying the baby from the village, trying to get her to safety...
Ah hell, he didnât want to think about that. Heâd stayed away from civilization for a little too long, that was all. Heâd allowed himself to overdo it.
âLiving like a refugee,â he murmured, thinking back.
