Constance rubbed her forehead and slammed her mug down on the table. âGod, I told her Youâd come through! But no one has room for an abandoned pregnant teenager it seems. What am I supposed to say to her? Sheâs already heard too many times that no one wants or cares about her, and more than one heart will be broken and lost if You do nothing. What am I supposed to do?â
The kitchen door creaked open, and Constance looked up. Her husband tossed his briefcase on the counter. âOh, youâre home early.â
He gave a weary smile. âYeah. Finished all my paperwork early.â He pulled up a chair next to her. âAnd what else can I say? I missed you.â He held out some flowers.
Constance blushed. âThank you.â
He took her hand and squeezed it, then stood back up, placing the flowers next to Constanceâs mug and walked to the counter to make himself his own cup of tea.
Constance watched him and sighed. He glanced back at her. âIs something wrong?â
Constance nodded her head. âYou remember how I told you about that girl I metâ¦â
âMhm, youâre trying to find her a place to stay right?â
Constance nodded, but Ranaan had turned back to pouring his cup. She turned to gaze at her own. There was no more steam coming from it.
Ranaan placed a hand on her shoulder; she stiffened and looked up at him. He raised an eyebrow and put his cup down. âItâs really bothering you.â
âI couldnât find anyone.â
Ranaan sat down and without hesitance said, âWe can make room.â
Constance's heart lurched into a race. âWhat?â
Ranaanâs expression became slightly nervous. âWe couldâ¦take her in.â
Constance as she looked at the kitchen around her. A near-replica of their old home burned in the fireâwith some minor adjustments. Theyâd made the living room larger and changed the room once meant for a child into an office. âBut we donâtâ¦can we afford that?â
Ranaan twisted his ring. âIf a life hangs in the balance, how could we not?â
âIt would be a lotâ¦sheâs a teenager. Sheâs pregnant. Who knows what all has happened in her past?â
Ranaan raised an eyebrow, and Constance fell silent. Tears were in her eyes as he took her hands. âNo one said it would be easy. Raising a child wouldnât have been easy. Losing them wasn't either. Working to keep our marriage intact wasnât easy. Not everything we go through is easy. Do you think it will be easy for her to make this choice? But God gave us choices. After the miscarriages and Viviaâs death, you were faced with the choice to trust God. After my mistakes, you were faced with another choice, and you chose the hard one. I was a stupid, selfish fool who didnât deserve your love, and I canât imagine how hard it was for you, but now we are hereâ¦and Heâs asking us to do something hard together. And thereâs no one Iâd rather do it with than you.â
Constance blinked rapidly, trying to keep the tears from escaping, but they did.
