A few days later, Kent and I are eating lunch at his shop when I deliver the good news. “Clem offered to babysit the kids tomorrow night.”

He looks up from the chicken salad sandwich I made for him, his eyebrows raised. “Both of them?”

I nod. “Both of them.”

Since he took care of me that day I was sick, we’ve been practically inseparable. He and Heinz have dinner with us almost every day, and he’s joined me on a couple of my late-night drives, but we can’t seem to get any real alone time. It worries me that he’s going to give up on having any kind of relationship with me, so I finally caved and asked Clem for help.

“Well.” He puts the sandwich down and wipes his mouth with a napkin. “What are we going to do?”

“I think we should go out,” I say quickly before my mind goes down a different path.

“You do?” he asks, seeming surprised.

“Yes,” I answer definitively, even if it is kind of a lie. I don’t really want to go out. I want to stay in. I want to strip this beautiful man naked and savor every inch of his skin. I want to have so many orgasms that I can’t walk.

But I also want to show him that I can have a good time. That life with me isn’t always babies and barf. Kent is a single man who I’m sure had a life before I came along and monopolized every moment of it. I want to get to know his friends. I want to do something that he wants to do for once.

“Where do you want to go?” he asks.

“Wherever you want to take me. Wherever you normally hang out.”

He raises an eyebrow. “At my house?”

Another tempting idea, but I shake my head. “No, I mean…with your friends. Take me out, Kent.”

He nods, picking his sandwich back up. “Okay. I can do that. I’ll pick you up at eight.”

That seems a little late, but I don’t argue. I’m cool. I’m young. I’m…exhausted. But I am determined to prove to Kent that I still know how to have fun, even if it kills me.
