DETECTIVE BECKY HARRIS
Chapter 27
Becky dialled DCI Munroe’s number and stood pacing until she picked up. ‘Ma’am, I think Gillian Lane could be in danger. I’ve now spoken to the list of Hannah’s friends I got from her mum. One of them is Katherine Meadows, an editor at Life Style magazine. She knew about the story Hannah was writing on the refugees, that Neal Lane was helping Hannah with. I think he was blowing the whistle on some financial irregularities at World Food Corps. It’s a motive for their murder.’ She gabbled on without pausing for breath, laying out her theory. ‘Maybe the killer went after Gillian to try and kill her too because he suspected she knew something. Otherwise there was no reason to chase her out of that house instead of making his escape. That’s why the laptops, phones, camera, photos, hard drives, and flashdrives aren’t anywhere to be found. The killer wanted to get rid of any evidence. I don’t think their murders are related to the Wilsons’ murders at all. And I think he could try to get to Gillian again. We need to put someone guarding her door and get her into protective custody when she gets out of the hospital tomorrow.’
There was silence on the other end of the line.
‘Ma’am, are you still there?’
‘Yes, I was just making sure you’d completely finished,’ Munroe said calmly. ‘Do you have any evidence to prove this theory?’
‘No. But—’
‘Exactly. And how would you explain the words the killer wrote on the wall? Or the identical MO of the crime scene – the knife wounds and exact same cause of death as Donna and Jim Wilson?’
‘It’s a copycat.’ Becky thought back to the conversation she’d had with Warren Carter. Although the words on the wall had never been released to the public prior to the death of Hannah Ryan and Neal Lane, there were plenty of people who knew about them. Everyone involved in the previous investigation, for starters, which included the very people Warren wanted her to spy on, which in turn included the DCI she was talking to right now. But it was a big leap for Becky to assume her own kind would be involved in killing Neal Lane and Hannah Ryan. A leap she wasn’t comfortable with at all. What possible reason would there be? Police officers gossiped to each other all the time. DI Thornton had recognised those words at the scene straight away, as had Becky, but she couldn’t remember where she’d heard it from. SOCO officers would’ve known, too. Any one of them may have told someone else who’d told someone else. ‘But what if I’m right and the killer tries again? Surely we should look into David Bennington and World Food Corps more closely.’
‘I think you’re going off on a tangent that’s totally off the mark. There’s no way I can authorise the budget for protective custody when I don’t believe she’s in any danger,’ Munroe said. ‘The killer knows Gillian can’t ID him so he’s not going to try again.
