Chapter Thirty
âHoly crow. Were you a racecar driver in a previous incarnation?â I said, gripping the Gremlinâs dashboard.
âI used to street race when I was young and foolish,â said Marco as he maneuvered with the precision of an Indy racecar driver through the dense expressway traffic.
âLike in Rebel Without a Cause?â
âMore like The Fast and the Furious. And itâs a good thing Iâm experienced, or you wouldnât stand a chance of making your flight.â
âAs long as you donât do that Tokyo Drift thing on the off ramp,â I said.
Marco turned to me for an instant with a huge grin on his face. âMy mission, Kalena Boyko, as Iâve chosen to accept it is to deliver you to the airport, as fast as I can, and in one piece,â said Marco.
âGood. I have no intention of losing my life sliding off some hair pin turn on a Toronto freeway. Aye carumba, Jim Phelps! Watch out for that transport!â I flung my arms upwards and covered my eyes.
âMerda,â yelled Marco.
âWhatâs the matter?â I said with my hands still obscuring my view.
âLook up ahead.â
I opened one eye before dropping my hands like dead weights. âMerda is right.â We were about to join four lanes of halted, bumper-to-bumper traffic that formed a sea of multi-coloured metal that stretched for miles ahead of us.
âIâve never seen anything like this, not even in a blizzard,â said Marco.
Sensing my eyes well up with tears, I shifted my gaze out the passenger window. The day had finally broken me. Via the windowâs reflection I watched Marco snag a cell phone from the visor and flip it open.
âYou shouldnât be driving and using the phone.â
âItâs an emergency.â
âWho are you calling?â I said, holding back the waterworks and still looking away.
âMy sisterâs boyfriend. If anyone can get us out of this mess, he can.â
âHow can he do anything?â
âHey, Vince. Itâs Mark. Howâs the cab dispatching biz today?â
Mark? He calls himself Mark?
âI bet. Iâm in the thick of it myself. Iâm driving a friend to the airport. What are you getting on the radio? Any cabbies found a secret passageway yet?â¦No kidding. Thatâs the closest you can get?...I guess thatâs what weâre gonna have to doâ¦Thanks, manâ¦â Marco snapped his phone shut.
âWhatâd he say?â
âHold on. Iâve gottaâ make the exit up ahead.â
âNo Tokyo Drifting,â I screamed as we shot across three lanes of honking cars before sliding onto an exit ramp.
âSorry. It was the only way I could get off the highway in time.â
âWhere are we going?â My heart pounded uncontrollably.
âVince said to head down Dixie Road as far as traffic is still movinâ. But once it slows down, he said to pull off, âcause thereâs just no point after that. Everyoneâs dropping off passengers on Dixie and theyâre walking into the terminals from there.â
My patent leather pumps gleamed up at me. I had to wear heels today, didnât I? I was going to wear a pair of pants and flats, but I had opted out of comfort clothing and wore a pencil skirt and sexy shoes so I would look smashing when Geoffrey picked me up.
