they'll know it right away," Frank heard Joe say,

Roseanne raised herself up and turned to him, gazing deeply into his eyes. "You're sweet, you know it?" she whispered, with a sad smile. *'How do you know I didn't do it? Maybe I did! I've been so crazy lately—crazy with hate and bad feelings. When they find out some of the things I said to Archer, they'll think I did it for sure!"

'They d be wrong. And I'd make them see it." Frank couldn't believe what Joe was saying. He was ruling out one of their prime suspects.

''How?" Roseanne asked.

"Easy," Joe told her. "You may have wanted Lampley dead. But you're much too emotional to commit a crime like this."

"What do you mean? I could have done it—I was going to do it!" Roseanne's voice was a desperate whisper.

"You never would have, Roseanne," Joe said, shaking his head. "Oh, maybe if he started in on you, m.ade you furious at any given moment."

"See?" she said.

"But you could never have planned it in advance, timed it so perfectly, and carried it out so coldly. Not you. Besides, you were on stage singing."

"That's true," Roseanne said, surprised.
