CHAPTER TWELVE

NEXT morning, halfway through her packing, the doorbell rang.

Assuming it was the chauffeur calling to collect her, Lindsey opened the door, taken aback to see a young man on the threshold, carrying a small wicker basket.

‘Miss Phillips?’ At her nod, he handed it to her and left.

She stood gazing at it, then nearly dropped it as the basket suddenly moved in her hand. She heard a plaintive cry, and with a gasp inched up the lid and peered inside. Bright blue eyes stared back at her, and she set the basket on the floor and carefully lifted out a cream and brown Siamese kitten.

‘You beautiful little darling,’ she cooed, holding it close and resting her cheek on the silky fur.

The kitten gave a protesting miaow and struggled to be free, and Lindsey set it on the floor. As she did, she found a card attached to the inside of the basket, and taking it out, saw it was from Robert.

‘You left Angus because of me,’ she read; ‘now you’re leaving me for Ramsden. So I’m sending you another cat to remind you why you came back to England. I’ve called him Bruce, and when you do, I hope you’ll think of me, because, like Robert the Bruce and his spider, I’m not giving up!’

It was a humorous note, yet she detected the seriousness behind it, and with a sudden pang picked up the cat and hugged it close again.

‘Miaow!’ it cried, and jumping free, darted across the room and up the curtain.

‘That’s not very friendly,’ she chided. ‘Come down and I’ll give you something to drink.’

Ignoring her, the kitten clawed its way higher, finally reaching the pelmet board and perching on the top of it, tail swinging.

‘Come down, Bruce!’ she ordered.

For answer, the kitten settled itself on the pelmet ledge and wrapped its tail around its legs.

‘I can see I’ll have to resort to bribery.’ Smiling, Lindsey went into the kitchen, filled a saucer with milk and carried it into the living-room. Setting it on the floor, she tapped the rim to attract the kitten’s attention, but he yawned delicately and remained where he was.

‘Be like that, then,’ she declared. ‘You’ll just have to stay there till you get tired of it.’

She went on with her packing, and had almost finished when there was another ring at the door. Expecting to see Robert following on his gift, she ran to open it, her warm smile dying as she found herself staring at Tim. But a Tim from the past. In grey trousers and unstructured, lighter grey jacket, his hair slightly windblown, he was more like the man she had married.

She swallowed hard. ‘I—I thought you were sending your driver?’

‘I felt it would look better if I collected you personally. It’s what I’d do if our reconciliation was genuine.’

‘You’d better come in and wait. I’m not quite ready.’

Leaving him in the sitting-room, she went into the bathroom and hurriedly emptied the cabinet. She hadn’t yet packed her books, but there was no time; she would return for them later.
