Chapter 13
Oh, holy shit. Gray’s brain was about to explode. From the stunned look on everyone else’s face, he was pretty sure he wasn’t the only one who felt that way. “Quinn’s a what?” he asked for the third time.
Shannon sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. He answered patiently though. “An omega.”
Silence settled over the room as everyone tried to absorb the bombshell Shannon had just dropped. “Are the girls in bed?” Gray asked, just to give everyone some time to process.
Quinn, who was looking a little shell-shocked, nodded. “Yeah. Faith and Hope are already asleep and Honor was pretty drowsy.”
He fell silent again, unable to think of anything else to say. Finally, Trina spoke up. “I thought omegas were a myth.”
Declan cradled Quinn closer to his chest, but Gray got the idea it was Declan who needed the contact more than Quinn. “No, omegas are real. It’s just they’re so rare that most people will go their entire lives without meeting one.”
“I thought I was a submissive,” Quinn said curiously. He seemed to be getting over his initial shock and was apparently eager to find out more.
“Do you feel like a submissive?” Shannon asked.
Quinn cocked his head. “Ummm…I don’t exactly feel the need to be a dominant wolf.”
“But you don’t act submissive at all, now that I think about it,” Cullen piped up. “Remember when your cousin was threatening Trina and you stood between them? That’s definitely not something a submissive would do.”
Gray fiddled with his fork. He always needed to fiddle with something when he was thinking. “So what is the difference between submissives and omegas then?”
Shannon’s voice was quiet when he answered, almost as if he was afraid to reveal his secret. “From what I understand, omegas are dominant shifters that don’t feel the need to assert their power. Their main focus is not on advancing in the pack hierarchy, but on maintaining harmony in their pack. They are so valuable because they can calm the whole pack instantly.”
That actually made a heck of a lot of sense. While the pack had never been particularly violent, it wasn’t until Quinn had made his appearance that they had become the family that they were today.
“How did you know?” Declan asked. “He’s my mate and I didn’t even know.”
“I’ve met an omega before. You’re scent, along with your coloring, tipped me off. I might not be able to scent things from the distance that wolves can, but my scent is quite accurate when I’m close enough. Also, omegas tend to be quite fair. The tiger omega I knew actually had white hair and the palest green eyes you’ve ever seen. I’m guessing that there aren’t many blond wolves?”
Shannon took a deep breath and continued. “Please don’t tell anyone. I wasn’t really supposed to know about the tiger omega. It’s just that I was at the tiger council on an errand. I ran into a tiger that was under the council’s protection. We got to talking and it sort of slipped out during the conversation.
