Chapter Thirteen

Jenna’s and Gran's heads swiveled to Monica, who frowned, then said to me, "See? As soon as you mention blood everyone thinks the vampire did it."

"Did the vampire do it?" Gran asked, crossing her arms and pinning Monica with what I called her interrogating stare. I bit my lip, fully expecting Monica to lose her cool, but she surprised me by chuckling and shaking her head.

"I did not."

Gran relaxed. "That's all I needed to hear." Gran nodded, giving Monica a wink. "Who’s next on the board?"

"Hold on," I said. "Monica has to go on the board."

"Why?" Gran grumbled. "She didn't do it."

"And I believe her. But...what if someone is out to frame her? Make her look guilty? We can't just leave her off because she's our friend. Sorry, Monica," I added, knowing what it was like to be a suspect.

She smiled thinly. "That's fine, I don't mind. The truth is ladies," she said, addressing Jenna and Gran, "I should be on the board. I was having a relationship with Llewellyn. I was with him the night he died."

"You were?" Gran and Jenna said in unison.

She nodded. "Yes."

"This is why Jackson isn't here." Jenna nodded. "Because the police haven't worked that out yet. Otherwise, you'd be down at the station."

"I'm going there after this," Monica told us. "I'd rather be seen as cooperating than hiding."

"I'll come with you," I offered, not wanting her to go on her own.

"Thanks."

Another boom of thunder rattled the walls and the lights flickered.

"Talk about dramatic flair." Whitney suddenly materialized, startling us all.

"Where have you been?" I asked, hand over my racing heart.

"What? Miss me?" she drawled, floating around the space in front of the murder board.

"Surprisingly, yes," I muttered.

"Awwww, you care," she cooed, smiling. Then her face dropped. "Actually, I've been hiding."

"Hiding?"

"Yeah. That demon hunter has been catching ghosts in his traps. I didn't want to get caught." She shivered, rubbing her hands up and down her arms.

I was already shaking my head. "No, he wasn't. I helped Llewellyn with his traps and they weren't for ghosts."

"They were. I saw it. With my own eyes," she protested.

"Saw what? Exactly?"

"Well." She floated up toward the ceiling. "I was taking a stroll along the Esplanade—I like to visit The Tea Leaf—so I was heading there when I saw that hunter guy pull up outside on his motorbike."

"Scooter," I corrected.

"Whatever." She waved away my interruption. "And he had one of those urn things with him."

I nodded. "That would be a trap, yes."

"So he took that inside The Tea Leaf. Naturally, my interest was piqued because I like to sit at one of their tables in the window and catch the afternoon sun. It's so quaint in there with their pink-and-white pinstriped wallpaper and roses on their teacups." She sighed, her face taking on a dreamy quality.

"What happened next?" Gran interrupted, saving me the trouble.

"Oh yes. So I followed, and the hunter guy was out back with the urn and he placed it on a shelf in the storeroom."

"Were the Oliver sisters with him?" I asked.
