No, we werenât lucky.
Me and Mom planned it that way.
She said to hide it
right before it was time to look for it.
And we paid Dad in extra cake to keep you busy.
Oh, is that why he got like half the cake that year?
It wasnât half.
I think it was half.
âDad, you remember that year you ate like half Astridâs birthday cake?â
He doesnât respond.
âSheâs out here every day doing her fairy dance,â I say. âI wish I knew what was wrong with the willowâwhy itâs hardly grown in four years. I keep expecting her to ask why the fairy dance isnât working.â Four years? Actually, itâs been seven, but I donât correct myself out loud.
The corners of his mouth turn down.
Astrid abandons her dance and picks her way down the slippery creek bank. Across the water, on Brentâs side, the lights in the kitchen blaze on.
âFairies donât exist, Kirsten.â His voice is quiet. Tired.
âI know that. Iâm just having fun with her.â
He closes his eyes for a long moment before speaking. âYouâre having fun.â
âYeah. Iâm sure she knows itâs just a game. Sheâs nine.â Ten. Eleven. Twelve.
He nods. Astrid steps from rock to rock in the low, cold creek.
âBut reallyâwhat if she asks why itâs not growing? I mean, itâs not diseased. Not that I can tell, at any rate. Itâs just...not growing. It should be...I donât know, twenty feet tall by now. Maybe more, given where I planted it. Weeping willows grow fast.â
âI guess...â he shakes his head like heâs clearing water from his ears. âI guess everybody deals with it differently.â
I frown at him, but he doesnât notice. We sit there for a while, in silence but for the frog-songâgao, gao⦠gao, gaoâwhile Astrid goofs around on the rocks. Why doesnât she act her age? I get up. âAstrid, I keep telling youâthe fairies wonât come if you pester them. Theyâre shy. Why donât you go inside and get ready for your birthday?â
She grins and hops across the creek to our yard. Her rain boots flop as she double-times it up the hill ahead of me and scrambles onto the deck. Dad re-stained it the week before Astrid was six. You canât tell the stain-job is that old, thoughâfor some reason, it hasnât weathered at all.
âBoots off outside!â I call. She only still fits in them because sheâs as peaked as her willow. Isnât that a medical thing, when kids donât grow? Donât thrive? Doesnât it have something to do with food allergies or something? She ignores me.
By the time Iâm inside, sheâs already holed up in her room. Mom and Grandma are in the living room, arguing again. Momâs wearing a cardigan that hides her sliced-and-bandaged arm.
âJust put it all away someplace,â says Grandma. Sheâs holding the books that Astrid and I left out.
âI canât, Mom.â
âItâs not healthy. She needs to focus on the world around her.â
The doorbell chimes. I open it, and Mrs. Martin is standing there with Jeremiah. Heâs finally stopped biting Astrid every time sheâs in the yard, but the pinched look on his face reveals that his mother has forced him to accompany her.
