As she made to flounce away, headed back inside, he swung after her, taking her unawares as he caught her wrist, stalling her precipitate flight.

‘Lydia.’

She sucked in her breath, and put all her senses on hold again. ‘Yes.’ It was barely audible, lost in the dangerous darkness.

‘I don’t want to quarrel with you.’

Oh, God! His voice was too soft, too deep, too warm.

‘What are you saying?’ Her breath trembled through her lungs. ‘You want us to be friends?’ She looked at him warily, feeling his thumb tracing the pumping blue vein in her wrist with a devastation that left her floundering.

‘I don’t think we can ever be that,’ he murmured with unstinting truth.

No. Not friends. Not lovers either! Something inside her shrieked its cruel insistent warning. She couldn’t bear it if he was kind to her, if he showed her any tenderness. She’d rather have him cruel and bitter, throwing insults at her. At least she could cope with that.

‘I’m your employee, Blaine. That’s all,’ she reminded him, with her chin coming up to add conviction to her forced indifference, but it took every ounce of willpower she possessed to walk away from him, back to the house.
