The unmistakable smell of foot deodorant and sound of tumbling bowling pins permeated the air and pulled me out of my semi-euphoric state. Man, I had not paid attention to the last spare. Everyone was congratulating Max, so he must've gotten a tough one.

"Good job," I said, slapping Max on the back myself as he sat down next to me.

"Give me a break, man. You didn't even see it," he said.

"Okay, okay. So I wasn't paying attention," I answered.

"What's the deal? Your mind doesn't seem to be with us tonight. What gives?"

I smiled a huge smile at my friend. "I'm in love."

"Oh, God."

"No, it's the real thing this time. Seriously, she's the best."

"And where did you meet this one?" he asked.

"Her name's Renee. She's the girl who called about the car. She's driving up here with her things right now. She's moving in tonight."

"You're kidding. It's been what? A hot minute?"

"Nah, nah. It's been almost four weeks. She's a vet tech. She gave her notice down in The Cities and found a job in Hermantown. She's coming up here with one load of her stuff in her car tonight, and we're going back with my pickup tomorrow for the rest of her things."

"Are you sure about this?" he asked.

"As sure as anybody can be," I answered. "She's perfect for me."

A loud cheer rose from the group next to us in the bowling alley as, once again, our team got our butts kicked in our league. This wasn't going to be my night bowling-wise, but everything else had been smooth sailing for past few weeks since Renee and Buster had come into my life.

My friend, Max, shook his head as if to say I was hopeless.

"I can't wait for you to meet her, man. She doesn't care about my neatness fetish. She thinks it's endearing and besides, she makes it better. She got me a dog."

"You? A dog? You do realize they pee and poop, right?"

"Yeah, and I don't care. I mean, I care, but I can take care of those little things. I even let Buster in the backseat of the Camaro. And he drools!"

"Wow, you must be serious."

"See what I mean? I see it as her car now, so she can do what she wants with it. I'd never let him in my car without, you know, a blanket down underneath him or something, but I'm way better when Renee is around."

"All right. You have me tentatively convinced," he said, holding up his palms in self-defense. "I've been watching your moon-sick look all night and wondering what the issue was. It's like you don't even like bowling anymore."

"Well, I was sitting here thinking how I'd much rather be with Renee than bowling with you guys. No offense."

"Oh, none taken, I'm sure. So, are you quitting? We need a fourth man, you know."

"Well, what if I had my dad take my place?"

Max looked up at the ceiling, pondering my suggestion, his fingers going to his jaw. "Yeah, I suppose that would work.
