Chapter Twenty
Celine
We were all sitting around the fire eating later that night. So far, no ogres have shown up or set off any alarms that Brier has set. Our meal consisted of some bread I had brought with me and some boar that Tate had killed. Some of it was hanging over the fire drying so we could have it tomorrow when we needed it.
It is good. A little plain with just some salt on it, but I’m not about to complain. On the boat, there is a small kitchen, and it is stocked with some dry goods that I saw today. Tomorrow, I will find something to cook for us all while we go downriver.
Tate and I are sitting beside each other. He has his arm loosely around me, and we laugh as we feed each other pieces of the meat. Lindon and Brier are talking more to each other, leaving us alone. That is until Lindon speaks up.
“So, Cherry, you said earlier you had something to tell us all,” he says, looking at me. “How about now?”
Tate looks at me, saying, “Is there something you need to tell us?”
“Yes, I do,” I say, pulling away from him and drinking some water. Okay, it is now or never. The sooner I get this over with, the better. “It’s kind of a long story, so please bear with me, and please don’t say anything until I’m done.”
I look at all of them, and they nod in agreement. So, I take a deep breath and begin.
“Living at the convent was actually one of the most peaceful times in my life. I was happy, but as the years went by, I became sad. When people came to the convent, I always hid away from them, knowing they would see me as a monster. I could never leave or go to the river and take a swim, go running in the fields, be free from those walls, in any way.”
“That must have been so hard for you,” Tate says softly as he rubs my back.
“It was. About three years in, I realized I couldn’t live like that for the rest of my life. I needed to find a way out, so I started my research. I found something that said a mage could see the future. I thought that if I could get a mage to come to the convent, maybe they could help guide me. I found a summoning spell and cast it. I didn’t even know if it worked until a few months later, Alice came to the convent.”
“Sister Alice?” Brier asked me. “She is a Mage?”
“Yes,” I say, looking at him. I am still curious as to his interest in Alice.
“That is why I felt magic on her,” he says as he throws a small bone he had cleaned with his teeth into the fire. “I knew she wasn’t an element and thought she might have been a witch. But it didn’t make sense to me why she would be in a convent as a nun.
