Chapter 21

Jess

The next few days seemed to fly by for Jess. Her days were spent mostly in the labs, focusing on the research and playing catchup with the advanced methods employed by the Guard. There was a lot to catch up on and a lot to learn, but she buckled down and forced herself to take it in as fast as possible. Each new day felt like a grain of sand passing through a giant timer. She wasn’t sure how many grains were left before the top was empty, but each passing minute was a reminder that their answers couldn’t wait.

She fully believed that they could come up with a solution. The world was relying on her, even if they didn’t know it.

Outside of the lab, things continued to be awkward between herself and Eli. She felt bad for the way she’d spoken to him back when he came to visit her at the lab. He’d come to her with open arms and bared himself to her, and she’d lied and thrown it all back in his face.

Standing there and telling him that she didn’t feel the same way was one of the harder things she had done, and it had crushed her to see the hurt on his face. It was hard to tell how he’d react, but she hadn’t expected the anger. Eli was a statue of self-control. Seeing that momentary break scared her, but it intrigued her too. There was a brief glimpse of his other side which was always so well hidden. That was the side he had always kept away from her, outside of the brief moments when he fed. Even then… she knew he was holding back.

What would it feel like to see him without restraint?

There was still tension between them when they got back to the room that night. Jess was mentally wiped out after her day in the lab. She grabbed food in the mess hall with Takomi and other scientists after they were finished, and she headed straight back to her room afterward. Takomi and the others invited Jess for a drink at one of the bars in Terra’s ‘recreational zone’, but Jess declined.

She just needed some alone time to recharge and reset her mind. Her plan was to grab her things from the room and ask Juliana about finding somewhere else to sleep. Shame burned across her face when she recalled the way she’d treated Eli earlier.

Gentle heat met her as she stepped into the room. She heard the sound of running water and closed the door behind her. Eli shouted from the bathroom.

“Jess?”

“Yeah, just me,” she said and kicked her shoes off. “I’m just packing my things up. Don’t mind me. Carry on.” She took a moment to rest on the bed and then she jumped up to pack her clothes away. Jess hadn’t actually checked with Juliana if there was somewhere else she could go, but she assumed there would be plenty of other rooms. The water shut off a few moments later.
