At this point I’ve driven at speed so many times through this city I could probably do it in record time with my eyes closed. Every light turned green, every car pulled out of the way at just the right moment, it was like the stars were aligned just right for me to get to the scene of a horrible murder. Sure I was likely to find evidence there that would implicate at least one of the rogue hunters in a series of murders, but if the price for that was looking at yet another dismembered body I was liable to throw something.

What I was surprised at though was the fact that once again I was heading downtown to the wealthier districts, normally when serial or spree killers start up they might initially go for someone richer, but that’s usually just a spur of the moment thing. If they didn’t already start in the slums or the poorer districts then they moved there very quickly, there was far less chance of you being caught if the people you killed weren’t the type who could afford their own personal lawyer. Cops stayed out of the poorer areas if they could, only going in there for shootings and drug busts, there wasn’t much of a patrol presence to speak of.

But for someone to not only take their first life in one of the more guarded areas but to keep doing so? That was someone who was both ambitious and skilled, neither of which I liked to see in serial killers. I also wasn’t a fan of the fact that an entire street had been cordoned off, whatever happened here was messy, and I wasn’t overly interested in getting anymore blood on any of my clothing.

Parking my car behind the crowd that had gathered to stare and grab the badge from my dashboard, I stepped out and made my way towards what was inevitably going to be something awful. It was just a question of how bad.

“Amy!” Rick called out, stepping forward to meet me at the police tape. “I’m glad you’re here, maybe you can help us out with this one.”

“You know sooner or later you’re just going to have to pay me all day, every day if I can’t even rely on a steady day off.” I ducked under the tape, accepting the pair of gloves he offered me. “What’ve we got?”

“Another murder, we don’t know for sure it’s the same guy yet but I think it’s a pretty safe assumption, they have the same sort of… dramatic flair.” He led me to the front of yet another residential building, the kind that looked like they called the police on you for just standing outside for five minutes. “Honestly this one has people even more stumped than the last, at least the call in was faster than last time.”

“Why’s that?” I said, stopping when I saw the pool of blood in front of the stairs. A pool of blood, and no body.
