Chapter Four

Hiroki wanted to rail at the gods for what they were doing to him. Today, he had endured the most wonderful event of his life followed by the most horrific. Loxis had finally tasted his blood and told him how sweet it was, making it clear he wanted Hiroki. He hadn’t exactly said Hiroki was his mate, but the look in his eyes had said it for him. That surge of happiness had given Hiroki so much strength, but then his encounter with Shigure had sapped every ounce of it away.

He’d stayed sprawled on the floor for a while, crying, and then he’d forced himself to get up. He’d decided to have a bath. Bathing had been a privilege all those years with the demon, and the warm water surrounding him felt good. He heard someone enter the bedroom, and soft footsteps came to the bathing chamber.

“Hiroki?” Loxis said.

“Come in.” Hiroki didn’t look up until Loxis approached the sunken tub. Loxis began to undress, but he didn’t seem to have seduction on his mind.

Loxis lowered himself into the tub, taking a cloth from a basket at the side. He picked up a bar of soap as well and began to wash Hiroki with a very gentle touch. They didn’t speak for a while. Loxis’s motions proved soothing and comforting. Hiroki didn’t want to break the spell, but he had to say something.

“Is Shigure all right?”

“He seems well enough. He is very frightened. We were arguing, and I grew tired of hearing him say such harsh and untrue things about you. I told him I have demon blood as well. His anger evaporated. He was terrified. Ladon is going to stay with him. I’m sorry I frightened him.”

“It’s not your fault.” Hiroki shifted his legs to move closer to Loxis. “I like Ladon. He seems very kind. That will be good for Shigure.”

“I hope so. I feel sorry for him, but it makes me angry when he says such horrible things about you.” He set the cloth aside and cupped water in his hands to rinse Hiroki’s shoulders and back. When he was done, Loxis rubbed his shoulders until Hiroki slumped back against him.

“So you understand then?” Hiroki said. “It hurts so much, but part of me understands. I represent the evil that has invaded his life.”

“It sounds like his mother wanted to make sure he would never want anything to do with you. She must have told him lots of lies about you and about demons in general.”

“But anything she said about my father was true, of course. If I had disobeyed or run away, he would have killed Shigure.”

“We must focus on changing his mind and showing him who you really are.”

Hiroki turned and wrapped his arms around Loxis. “Just hold me. I don’t want to talk about it anymore.”

Loxis held him without a word. Despite what had happened the day before, being naked in Loxis’s arms didn’t inspire lust. Hiroki felt loved. Was it because Loxis had
