Chapter Twenty-Two

What Are You Doing Here?

Work is of the usual sorts. Nothing unordinary, out of place, or particularly exciting. Despite a rough beating, significant blood loss, and near decapitation, I feel particularly energized. Liam hasn’t said a word regarding yesterday. If I didn’t know Liam better, I’d say he was acting weird, but he’s not. The detective is as diligent as ever, focusing on work. Liam’s fingers drum on his temple, a frustrated frown furrowing his brow. My desk phone blares at me, startling my focus on the neat array of reports, statements, and pictures. I wince at the alert's sharpness and beat the volume button down with a fury.

“Hello, Miss Bellman, what can I do you for?” I inquire, unsure of what I’m in for. I wasn’t expecting anyone to be coming in. I can only imagine that perhaps Anita needs reassurance. Maybe Karen has news from the neighborhood watch? Goodness, I hope nothing has happened!

“Mallory, you have a- a guest here,” Amanda tells me, her voice rising, “He says he would like to talk- with someone from the department,” she says, voice choking up.

“Yes, Miss Bellman, we can set up a room to speak. Who did you say was here?” I wonder. There’s talking in the background, muffled from what I can hear.

“What’s your name?” Amanda inquires with a sense of urgency in her voice. There’s a pause, perhaps her hand over the phone. Still, I can’t quite pick up on sounds from the main room. “He said you’d know the name. Officer Montanari?” she tells me.

“We have someone coming in?” Liam wonders, head cocked to the side.

“Right. Send Leo through. We’ll be waiting,” I tell Amanda and accidentally slam the phone down. Heads turn at the clank, watching me pop up from my desk. Liam’s hand on my shoulder stops me. “Leonardo, he’s- he’s here,” I explain. Liam gives me a look, but it doesn’t take long to see I’m not joking. I wish I was joking.

“The building is protected, so why?” Liam wonders.

“He’ll be weaker. But he could put up a fight if he tried,” I whisper.

“Why not arrest him? The agency can,” Liam argues.

“It’s too soon. If Leo goes down, his fledglings will scatter. It's easier if they stay in one place versus running,” I warn him.

“Alright then,” Liam decides, squaring up his shoulders; he fixes his jacket.

“Hold on, you’re not going in this cold,” I disagree.

“I’m not in this cold. You know that. I can handle this as much as I trust you to watch my back,” Liam decides, nudging my shoulder as he heads for the main room.

“You okay there, Mallory?” Liam wonders. I head for one of the meeting rooms without a word, and Liam follows. I hear him talking, calling through the waters too deep to make sense. Officer Vlcek is talking with Leonardo, their footfalls going to the meeting room. What a strange thing to do! Why come back to the place you ended both our lives? I bump up the heat to the room and go for the doorknob, but Liam stops me.
