Chapter Twenty-Five

The way Ellonyia had talked about cleaning up the room above the garage, Karl thought it would be a few days’ work to clear it out. It was really only a few stacks of boxes, though.

The bed and dresser that were going into the room were stuck in a corner of the garage, so the boys carried them upstairs, then stacked all the boxes in the now empty corner. In less than an hour, the upstairs room had the bed and dresser, but nothing else.

Karl and Eric put the twin bed together. Just as they finished, Ellonyia came in with sheets, pillows, and a comforter.

She looked around the room. “It’s pretty plain in here. We’ve never used this room for anything except storage. We can paint it if you want.”

“Black. All black walls,” Eric said.

Ellonyia shook her head. “He always wants to paint things black. We never let him, but he always wants to. If you’ve got any posters or anything you want to bring, feel free. This is your room now.”

Don Swanson walked in carrying a small television and set it on the dresser. “There’s no cable outlet here, but we’ve still got our old antenna on the roof, and we can hook you into that. You’ll be able to get the Portland channels at least.”

“Hey!” Eric said. “I don’t have a TV in my room!”

“Right. Start paying me fifty bucks a month and I’ll get an old black and white TV for your room too.”

“Pass,” Eric said. “I’ll just hang out in here with Karl.”

“That’s what I figured,” Don said. He reached into his pocket and took out a small key ring with a single key on it. “This is for the side door that goes into the garage. That way you can come and go as you please. You’re an adult, and we’re going to treat you like one.”

“I swear to God, if I knew I could get all this stuff for fifty bucks a month, I would have gotten a job.”

“Really?” Don asked.

“Well...no, probably not,” Eric admitted.

“That’s what I thought,” Don said. He tossed the key ring to Karl. “The place is yours now. No need to check in with us, but if you need anything, let us know.”

Don and Ellonyia left, closing the door behind them.

Eric looked around and said, “Your room is a lot bigger than mine. I think we should have our D&D sessions in here. There’s a folding table and chairs in the garage. We can bring it up and set it up over there.” He pointed to an empty spot.

“Sure, I don’t care. That would be great.”

“Of course, you’ll have a lot of freshmen in your room then.”

“I can handle it.”

“Now if only we knew someone that worked at Pizza! Pizza! Pizza! that could bring us something to eat on Friday.”

Karl got a free pizza every day he worked more than four hours, so he just said, “Whatever. I won’t let you guys starve.” He looked around the room, which had walls that sloped inward at the ceiling.
