WHAT HAD HE gotten himself into? Gray studied the contents of the newly filled fridge, but he didn’t really see anything. His mind was too busy reeling over the prospect of taking care of the kids for a week. By himself.

What a moron. He should have told Ellen the real situation. Maybe she had a friend who could have come to help. No. She had enough to worry about with all those blood tests.

He thought about getting a beer, then changed his mind. He closed the door and went to his seat at the table. If only Shelby could stay. She was so damn good with the kids. She knew how to cook and she knew how to stop the arguing. She was also damn good company, and except for that one little thing, she was perfect.

Only the one little thing wasn’t so little. No way in hell he’d be able to keep his hands off her if she stayed. Not even for one night. It was like he’d been possessed or something. His attraction to her was all out of proportion. Knowing that didn’t help. He just kept on wanting her.

The truth was, he needed her expertise. Her woman’s touch. Her skill.

He needed her body in his bed.

Oh, hell.

As if his personal torment wasn’t enough, Shelby chose that moment to walk into the kitchen. He smiled. He hoped it looked real.

She glanced at the empty bags from the grocery store. The coffeepot with this morning’s cold coffee still in it. The floor where Scout had spilled some cereal. “Well?” she asked.

“Well, what?”

“Why are you sitting there? The trash needs to go out. There’s at least two batches of clothes that need washing, and then there’s lunch to prepare.”

“Oh.”

“So?”

“I can do that trash thing.”

She laughed. “I wasn’t offering you a choice. It all needs to get done.”

“But—”

“And I have to leave. It’s getting late.”

He opened his mouth, prepared to beg her to stay. But then he closed it again. The desire for her was inescapable, and he had no business messing with her life. She should leave. She should have left yesterday. “Okay. I’ll get right on it.”

She glanced at the utility room. “When’s the last time you did laundry?”

“I do laundry all the time.”

Her gaze went to him, challenging the veracity of his statement.

“Okay, so I let my dry cleaner do my laundry. It’s not calculus. I can figure it out.”

“Of course you can. You’re a very intelligent man.”

“Thank you.”

“And I’m sure you can figure out how to cook, too. It’s only a week.”

He felt his throat constrict as the panic bubbled up inside him. “No sweat.”

“Gray?”

“Yeah?”

“It’s all right. You’d better breathe again before you pass out.”

“Does that mean you’re staying?”

The urge to give in, to tell him she’d take care of everything, was strong. But had she learned nothing? Patterns. They could only be broken if she was willing to change. She’d be doing them both a favor by leaving. She gave him a sad smile and shook her head.
