Chapter Sixteen

HARRY’S INCESSANT pacing wasn’t helping Sam’s frayed nerves.

“This is amazing. Totally. But what does it mean?”

Sam rolled his eyes. “I don’t know, Harry. I didn’t know an hour ago, and I still don’t know now.”

“Don’t get me wrong. This is fantastic news. But what exactly is your gift?”

Sam decided to treat that as a rhetorical question. They had returned to the Bunker in silence, every member of the team throwing weird, surreptitious looks Sam’s way until he thought he was going to scream out loud. He had ignored Jonah’s order that Harry and Sam join him in his office to discuss what they’d learned and had charged up to their bedroom, Harry hot on his heels, and slammed the door against prying eyes and all further questions.

He hadn’t figured on Harry turning their sanctuary into a modern-day Spanish Inquisition.

Harry reached the window and then spun on his heel, making his way back to the king-size bed, where Sam sat watching him work himself up.

“Have you felt different these last few weeks? I mean, is this a recent thing, or have you had abilities for years and just not known about them?”

Sam threw up his hands. “Harry, I said I don’t know! I don’t know shit about how I blocked Gabe. I don’t know what powers I’m supposed to have. I don’t feel the slightest bit different. Can we please take a break?”

Harry sat on the edge of the bed and clutched Sam’s hand. “Sorry. I’m getting bent out of shape. This is just so… weird.”

“You said it,” Sam agreed. “But we’re not going to figure anything out tonight. Can we just forget about it for a few hours?”

“You got it,” Harry said fervently. “How about junk food and a movie? We could see if the rest of the gang are down. Or just hang out here if you prefer.”

Sam smiled gratefully. “Sounds perfect.”

He would have liked to hide away up here for the rest of the evening, but he knew there was no chance they’d be left alone. He’d already felt Jonah’s tentative probe at the edge of his mind, though he’d shut it down ruthlessly. He couldn’t imagine he and Harry would be left by themselves for much longer. Besides, he supposed he really should face the others sooner rather than later. It was better to get the awkwardness out of the way as quickly as possible.

“Pizza or Thai?” he said.

Harry shoved his shoulder and grinned. “No contest.”

“Anchovies?”

“You know it, dude.”

They ended up with three different types of pizza, at least four kinds of chips, and enough varieties of soda to keep everybody happy after Jonah nixed the idea of beer.

“You’re underage. And it’s terrible for your system,” he said, frowning at Gabriel, who had been the only one with balls enough to make the suggestion.

“And Mama would kick your ass,” Alejandro added.

Gabriel muttered something in Spanish, making Alejandro gasp and then snigger.

After several minutes of arguing, they finally agreed on X-Men. Harry pulled Sam down beside him onto a large, overstuffed chair and threw an arm around his shoulders.
