"Where is my staff?" Liss demanded shrilly. "For God sake, I leave for a few hours and the whole household falls apart! Am I to believe my daughter is capable of running the duchy when she cannot even manage the normal duties of a wife for a few hours?"

Garrett glanced up from the paper he held but didn’t respond.

"Say something!"

"I sent the staff away, woman. They know their true master. Care you to continue this complaining, or will you heft your own packages to your chamber?"

"Well!" she huffed, turning on her heel and flouncing from the room.

Garrett could hear her struggling with the bulky packages up the stairs. Oh she indeed had a surprise waiting for her. He waited for it… soon… she must be only steps away. And then it was upon him. The loudest shriek he had ever heard pierced the quiet of the manor. Garrett grinned evilly, listening for the sound of her rushing footfalls back down the stairs.

"What has happened to my chamber?" she shouted.

"You dare raise your voice to me?"

"I do! Garrett, I have made my position on this quite clear!"

"And I am your husband. Therefore you will take residence in my chamber henceforth and without complaint. The only remaining option is that you depart with the paltry belongings which you brought upon your arrival to my estate nineteen years past. The choice is yours." Garrett watched the emotions flicker across her face—first panic, then anger, and finally something far more devious and resolute.

"This is my daughter’s doing, is it not? What lies has she told you, my darling?"

"Bliss has said barely a word to me since my arrival home last night."

"Then why have I incurred such wrath?" she swayed into the room seductively. "Have I not been a good wife to you, husband? Have I not given you a fine heir in your likeness to carry on in your stead one day?"

"She is my likeness, and for that I am grateful," Garrett said icily. "As to your claim of being a good wife, the answer is most certainly not. Your treachery and betrayal has come to my attention, Liss. And though Bliss most certainly knows of it herself, and this is the cause of her extreme dislike of you, she has not spoken one word against you. No, news of your affairs has come to me quite independently. Therefore, I have taken measures to assure that your whereabouts are not unknown to me any further. Do you plan to travel, I will send someone trustworthy to accompany you. On my future excursions to London, you shall join me. And when darkness falls, it will be my bed you share and not the one of your lover. Is that clear enough for you, wench?"

"I will not stand for this!"

"Then you are free to leave," Garrett said calmly. "I will speak to William immediately about a divorce, and you will lose your coveted title. He is likely to refuse you title from another in the future, so you know, being loyal to me as he is.
