Chapter Seven

DB looked up from the medical journal he had been reading and glanced toward his bedroom door when he heard footsteps coming down the hallway. He cocked his head to listen, wondering if he would hear two sets of footsteps this time or just one. Nick hadn’t brought Jessica back to the house but that just meant he was spending most of his free time at her place. DB hardly ever saw him anymore.

He knew it was his own fault. He hadn’t been ready to face what had happened between them. By the time he was ready to acknowledge that he was falling for Nick—or maybe that he already had—the man was seeing Jessica almost nonstop.

DB had felt like he was out in the cold ever since. The easygoing friendship he had with Nick almost their entire lives was gone. They tiptoed around each other, each afraid to say the wrong thing, and even more afraid to touch in any manner.

Three weeks had gone by since that fateful night and DB felt like he was drowning. He knew things couldn’t continue this way. The tension between him and Nick was so thick, it hung in the air like a dead weight. Something had to give and DB was very much afraid it was going to be him.

A wave of apprehension swept through DB when he heard a soft knock on the bedroom door. DB’s throat swelled as if his heart had climbed right up. He swallowed hard before speaking, “Yes?”

The door slowly opened and Nick peeked in. “Do you have a minute?”

“Sure.” DB marked the page he was on in the medical journal and then closed it, setting the book on the nightstand. He pushed the pillows up behind him and then made sure the blankets were tucked safely around his waist. He wasn’t wearing anything but his boxers underneath.

Nick shut the door after walking in. His movements were slow but nervouslike. He pushed his hands into the pocket of his jeans, emphasizing the bulge behind his zipper. DB pressed his mouth together as he drew is legs up to hide the sudden tenting between his legs.

“What’s up?” he asked when Nick continued to just stand there, his gaze landing anywhere except on him. When Nick finally did look at him, there was so much apprehension in them that DB felt it sink into him. “Nick?”

“I wondered if it would be okay if I had Jessica over for dinner.”

DB swallowed with difficulty and then found his voice. “Yes, of course. And you don’t have to ask my permission, Nick. This is your home as long as you want it to be.”

“Well, I…uh…” Nick rubbed the back of his neck as if every ounce of tension in his body had pooled there. “I was kind of hoping you’d be there.”

“Oh.” DB took a deep breath and tried to relax. “I suppose that would be okay.”

“You’re my best friend, DB. I want you and Jessica to be friends.” Nick breathed out. It was a heavy weighted sound.
