J.J. was parked in Marcâs car, trying to decide upon her next move. She hadnât responded to her motherâs text, guessing that if it was truly a 9-1-1 situation, she probably wasnât going to have the time or even the ability to engage in digital conversation. But that meant she had no direction and could not develop a plan.
Then it occurred to her that she did have one possible resource. The text had gone to her father as well. She grabbed her phone.
âHello, Jayj,â came Danâs voice after the first ring.
âDid you get the text?â
âYes. Neal and I are headed toward Uruapan right now.â
âUruapan? Where the hell is Uruapan. The text said Tijuana.â
âYeah. Um, I may have turned on Momâs Find Friends before she left.â
J.J. smiled despite the seriousness of the moment. âYou were spying on her?â
âNO! I absolutely did not want to spy on her. I wanted the ability to spy on her.â
âTwo sides of the same naughty coin, if you ask me. So Find Friends shows her heading to⦠where again?â
âIt looks like Uruapan. Itâs a smallish town about 76 miles south of Tijuana. Thereâs a city with the same name, but thatâs not the place. Itâs the village that her icon seems destined for.â
Keeping the phone connection live, J.J. switched to her maps. âIt looks more like eighty-seven actual driving miles for me. A little over two hours. And there are fucking tolls.â
âPay them. Just get to Uruapan as fast as you can. Weâre a little closer. According to Nealâs GPS, weâll be there in about an hour-forty.â
J.J. had already started the car back up. âAlright. Iâm going to get going. Call me if anything happens.â
âHave you tried contacting Mom?â Dan asked.
âI havenât. I felt like that might not be the right move.â
âGotcha. By the way, Jayj, um, how is it that youâre only two hours from Uruapan?â
âI was in San Diego when I got the text.â
âOkaaaaay,â Dan replied, drawing the word out. âWhy?â
âThatâs a story for another time, Papa.
âFine,â he said. They both knew he wasnât really fine with that news at all. But he was willing to table that discussion for now. âHopefully, Iâll see you in a couple hours.
âUnless you go blind in the meantime, youâll see me.â
She ended the call and started following the route on the map, still wondering what sort of insanity she was rushing headlong towards.
