CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
Iâd set the alarm for 6:00 a.m. but awakened at 5:45. I used the room phone to call Lindseyâs cell number. It was 7:00 a.m. in Denver. She picked up and it was good to hear her voice.
âHey, sleuth, I was wondering if youâd call this morning. You didnât keep your promise to call last night. You have too many California girls to chase?â
âHi, Lindsâ¦Iâm sorry I didnât call---I couldnât. Things have gone to hell here.â
âAre you in trouble?â I could hear the concern in her voice.
âI donât know if Iâd call it troubleâ¦deep shit comes to mind.â I told her most of whatâd happened without going into detail about the shooting at the Embassy Suites. There was no need to worry her any more than she already was. I did tell her I was probably a fugitive from the FBI although Iâd only been in protective custody and not charged with any crimes. âThey arenât going to like that Iâm still here and hunting for Feng.â
âWhy are you still there? Canât they run this Feng guy down and put a stop to it?â
Iâd trapped myself by not telling her everything about the shooting. âYou know what, Linds? I feel like I owe it to Hank, or maybe Martie Remington. Itâs not as personal to the FBI as it is to Hankâ¦and I guess to me.â That probably wasnât fair. Martinez had taken the killings of her agents pretty hard.
Lindsey was quiet for a moment. âI can see that. You should stay and see it through, and you need to be careful. I know youâre probably sick of hearing me say that, but I mean it. Those guys sound bad, I mean, killing the girl here and now the FBI guyâ¦â She didnât finish the sentence as she completed the thought. The count was actually three, although she didnât know about Riggs, and I didnât know what had happened to Gail Porter either.
âThanks for understanding, Linds. Iâll try to keep in touch though Iâm not going to use my cell for a while just in case the feds can trace it.â
âYou better call me anyway. Iâm counting on it. Come home to me as soon as you can.â
âThatâs a promise.â
I hung up, poured a cup of coffee, and dialed Tom Montgomeryâs office.
âItâs about damn time you checked in.â Tom was in his normal frame of mind. Hedges had once told me Tom had a very even personalityâ¦heâs pissed off all the time. âThose FBI killings are all over the police wires and youâre right in the middle of John Nelsonâs. What the hell happened out there?â
I filled him in on everything. He listened without talking until I was finished. âSo what are you going to do now? You need some help?â
âHow well do you know Harry Thornton?â
âPretty wellâ¦why?â
âIâm going to need some eyes and ears and Iâm not going to get them from the FBI or the local cops. Harry seems like the kind of guy whoâd like to
