“Mr. Gardiner’s daughter?” Mr. Bennet repeated, leaning forward. “Really?”

“Yes. Remember, I told you that we had to soon prepare for their arrival. Mr. Edward Gardiner returned a day ago with his two sisters, Miss Jane and Miss Elizabeth.”

Sisters?

Sisters! How had he forgotten?

Mr. Bennet grabbed Thomas’s hand.

“Sisters!” He roared, just as Mrs. Hill entered, with some bread and cheese, and accidentally oversaw this next transaction. “Are you telling me that both ladies who arrived with Edward Gardiner yesterday are his sisters, and one was not his fiancée?”

Hill couldn’t resist looking a little surprised as she put the bread and cheese down. Only then did Mr. Bennet notice her presence.

“Hill?”

She curtsied, then left quickly, closing the door behind her.

When they were alone, Mr. Philips looked at his friend, making a deduction.

“Yes,” he confirmed. “Yesterday, Edward did return home, with his two sisters, who he had collected from West Berkshire. And this information is not new to you, or at least a part of it isn’t.”

Mr. Philips leaned back in his chair, analyzing Mr. Bennet’s expression.

Feeling the humiliation of his emotions giving way, Mr. Bennet stood up, looking away from his friend and pretending to become preoccupied with his books.

“Is this one of those moments?” Mr. Philips asked.

“What sort of moment would that be?” Mr. Bennet asked, putting his books back on the shelf.

“One of those moments where you have much to say, but you are afraid to say it. There is no point, it is already out. When did you see these sisters?”

“Yesterday. I was visiting Mr. Ogle’s tanning shop when I saw them enter Meryton’s marketplace. Edward got out of the carriage, to help a wagon, and two ladies exited. I forgot you telling me that he was bringing his sisters. By the way that they looked, I had assumed that one of them was his fiancée. How easily a fiancée and a sister can act the same.”

“Well, both relationships do tend to lend themselves to public displays of affection.”

Mr. Philips was not a fool. He could tell that his friend easily was developing a tender affection for one of the Gardiner women. Just as he had. The only problem was… which sister did he prefer?

This is where the situation grew a little frightening. Were both friends about to prefer the same woman? If so, how could their friendship last after that?
