Chapter 23
When the door finally opened, after what felt like a few years of waiting anxiously, she wasnât sure what she had expected. There was only a silhouette, a giant one and it engulfed most of the doorway. He watched her for a minute before saying, âI thought that you would have been a fighter. You donât seem like the type to be a victim who doesnât do anything but what is presented to her as a choice.â
She shrugged. Laura didnât have a huge amount of guilt playing dumb. Normally that wasnât her thing, but if she could give any false security to him then that would be absolutely fine by her. It wasnât a guarantee, and he could very well pull out a pistol and shoot her from the doorway. She almost laughed, thinking of her sitting there with a new hole through her head and him lying in the soapy and hopefully slippery water that sheâd tried to booby trap the floor with.
Laura really hoped that the pistol thing wasnât part of this. Just shy of a few seconds before the door opened, sheâd never even so much as considered that as an option, mostly because drugs and pain had seemed to be his thing so far. Laura realized she wasnât breathing. She tried to force herself to get one in and out, keeping everything looking as expected or what she would have thought that a freak such as this was expecting to see. She imagined pleading, bargaining, and really anything short of making a deal with the devil was something people attempted.
So, she started saying, âPlease donât kill me. I didnât do anything. I wonât tell anyone, I swear. We can just go our separate ways. I donât even know anything.â
âDo you really expect me to believe that?â
âKind of hoping you have a heart attack, and die right here on the floor before you do what is next.â
âWell, I must say that is a first. Not so much the woman wanting me to die, but the brutal honesty, definitely new.â
âYou sure we canât work this out?â
The Taker shook his head no. As he began to enter the small room, he seemed oblivious to the mess. He showed his hand, quite literally and she knew that strangling might be a factor which sheâd need to figure out a way to get around. His first step was the one sheâd prayed for. She didnât let herself move an inch. But his giant foot was barely on the floor before he seemed to realize what was going to be happening next, immediately.
His foot slid forward faster than sheâd have thought physically possible. He was looking like he was going to do the splits, all the way down. That was exactly what Laura didnât think would be possible. He tried leaning forward to try and catch himself on the tub. He tried hard, but it wasnât fast enough, and he was not close enough to the tub for it to be effectively helpful.
