SHOWDOWN
We no longer visited the apartment or the house in Brooklyn. That was done. Way too risky. We got rid of anything that could be traced back to us. It wasnât much to begin with, but we made sure we got rid of it.
We sat at a restaurant in the city, talking about it. It was five days after the explosion at the other building. Two days after we had our big change of heart.
It didnât last long. We knew now we werenât cut out for this. The only thing we were sure of now was that we wanted to live. That was our real ideology now, our true belief. We wanted to go home, but we knew that was impossible now. Now we just wanted to get out of the city. After that, who knows? The revolution was over. Shut tight.
Just one more thing. Jimmy and Kaz first wanted to remove the explosives from the room under the bank. They might be traced to us, they might still self-explode and kill. We had enough of bombs and ideology. They would take them and put them down one of the old elevator shafts. After that, we could leave. It would be over. I told them to please hurry. I would stay there in the restaurant and wait for them. I had no stomach left for the tunnels. We had to get out now. This was it. I tried to convince myself that by doing this one good thing we might be given a chance, that it really wasnât too late.
I prayed. It was all I could do. I prayed we be given a chance. It was the most irrational thing I could think of. Freewheeling again. Maybe this time it would work.
When they left I sat there, watching my hands shake. I was angry at my handsâ disobedience. I tried to force them to stop shaking but I couldnât. There was nothing to do but wait again.
A few minutes later two police cars showed up outside. Then an unmarked car showed up. Two guys got out of the unmarked car, checked out the payphone and the people walking by. Then one of them looked across the street towards the coffee shop where I was sitting. It was the big bald guy. I didnât see Jimmy and Kaz anywhere. I wanted to warn them. I wanted them here with me. I was scared shitless.
The men talked to the two policemen, who then drove off in their car. The two cops stayed for a while, looking up and down the street. They talked for a few minutes then they started walking across the street towards the restaurant.
I wanted to cry, I was so scared. And I was angry. They looked so fucking sure of themselves. Why not? They had the whole system behind them. System drones. They knew about us now. No question about it. It was time.
I moved to one of the tables at the back of the coffee shop and waited.
