"Hi, Stacy," Simon replied, not exactly friendly but not rude either.

"It's been a long time," Stacy said softly, walking over and planting a kiss on Simons cheek. "What've you been up to?" she added, her hand lingering on Simon's shoulder.

Simon stepped back so that her hand fell. "Growing my hair," he replied coolly.

® ♦ • = I'd wanted to stay out there. To give Simon moral support. But I knew he needed his privacy too, so I left them out there on the deck and went back inside. I decided against drinking anything else. If Simon didn't want to drink, then neither did I.

After reapplying my lipstick in the bathroom, I made my way back to the deck. Stacy and Simon were nowhere to be seen. Maybe they'd gone down to the beach? Taken a walk to talk things over? The idea burned me. I hated thinking of Simon talking to that witch after she'd caused him so much trouble and heartache. But what did they say...? Love is blind. Maybe Simon was still smitten with Stacy. Maybe one sweet word and that was all he needed to go right back in.

My throat constricted, and I felt like an idiot standing there. But I didn't want to go back inside either. There was no one in there for me.

"Mia!" Beth slid through the glass doors and threw her arms around me like she hadn't seen me in weeks. She was teetering in her high heels, her eyes red and glittery. Obviously she was trashed. Why else would she try to hug me? "Whacha doing all by your lonesome here?"
