As Mariah readied herself for their day trip, Zayad finished up an important phone call. It had been short and to the point. Tara Hefner was expecting him at one o’clock today, and he would not be late.

A flash of guilt invaded his belly, but he pushed it aside. He had come to California for answers and he would have them.

Mariah gazed around the inn’s sumptuous lobby and felt totally out of place in her jeans and white tank top. “Well if you wanted to spulge a little, this is how you do it.”

“It is comfortable,” Zayad said without enthusiasm.

Mariah snorted. “You must’ve really lived the high life before coming here, because this is way more than comfortable.”

Grand in scale yet inviting and peaceful in its Mexican flavor, the Ojai Spa boasted beautiful yellow travertine tiles, overstuffed white couches, handmade rugs and a ton of exotic plants. She’d never seen anything like it. Heck, the only place her ex-husband had ever taken her was the Yellow Duckling Bed-and-Breakfast in Buelton—which also happened to be the pea-soup capital of the world.

“Welcome to the Ojai Spa.” A fresh-faced young man and an exquisitely fit woman in her fifties, both dressed in white, sidled up to them with two cups of lemon-and-cucumber-scented water. “Sir, I will take you to your changing area, and Delilah will take you, Ms. Kennedy.”

“Well, I guess this is goodbye,” Mariah joked, giving Zayad a broad smile.

“Not for long, mi’nâr.”

“What does that mean?”

He only grinned, then walked away from her, leaving the fresh-faced kid to run after him toward the locker room. For a moment Mariah just watched. He, too, wore casual attire—linen pants and a white shirt—and looked completely at home in the fancy surroundings.

Gotta be the attitude, she thought.

“Please come with me, Ms. Kennedy.” Delilah led Mariah down a marble hallway and through a door marked Ladies. Once inside she found herself blanketed in the spa atmosphere. As she sipped her water, she took in the marble everything—the hot tub, steam shower and dry sauna. It was pure loveliness, and she was glad Zayad had talked her into coming here.

Delilah found Mariah a locker, then handed her a soft, white robe and one matching slipper. “I suggest you take your ankle brace off and enjoy a nice soak in the whirlpool before your massage, Ms. Kennedy. It’s scented with rosemary and mint and is very relaxing.”

“Okay, thank you.”

Delilah nodded, then gave her a very coy smile. “Enjoy your stay and the massage.” She pointed to a door at the far end of the locker room. “That will take you to your room. It’s number five.”

Mariah wasn’t even going to try and figure out the woman’s strange smile. Mariah was in paradise and she was going to enjoy every moment.

After a quick shower, she settled into the steamy, hot and deliciously scented whirlpool. Thirty minutes seemed like only seconds when she got out and slipped on her robe. Must be the way of the spa, she mused as she headed into massage room number five.
