Sitting at the exterior bar, a Sex on the Beach cocktail standing untouched in front of her, Tamsin hung up her phone and threw it down in annoyance.

She had known Jil would be annoyed, but not that annoyed.

She had chosen to text the band members rather than call them, figuring it would be quicker. Lucy and Roxie had immediately responded enthusiastically, full of questions about how she had managed to get them an in with Aspen LaRoche of all people.

Jil, on the other hand, had responded with a phone call. Somehow even the ring tone had sounded considerably angrier than usual.

“What do you mean, he wants us to play your stuff? We agreed we’d use mine!”

“Jil, I played him yours and mine. He liked mine better.”

“Your music isn’t worth shit. I’m not playing that for anyone.”

Tamsin had automatically found herself trying to think of conciliatory words as she always did with Jil, but somehow they’d all vanished as she’d opened her mouth.

“Then don’t fucking come, Jil. We’ll rock even better without you.”

Jil’s spluttered response had been cut off by the satisfying click of the END button.

It didn’t matter if Jil didn’t show up. Tamsin could play guitar just as well, and since they were her songs in the first place, she could probably play them better.

And Jil probably wouldn’t come now, since Tamsin hadn’t bothered to butter her up like she usually did.

Why was that? Why had she stood up to her instead?

Something in the back of her mind echoed, reminding her what Aspen had said about the power of submitting.

“In submitting, you hold all the power.”

And with Jil, she had never held the power. Jil had always been the one to rule where the band was going, what music they would play. And it hadn’t worked.

Now Tamsin felt more in charge, more empowered, than she had ever done before.

She would have to get the rest of the band together quickly on Sunday, after she got back—she would have to check with Aspen what time that would be. They could have a quick run-through of their older music, and she could remind herself how it felt to play lead guitar again.

Her phone vibrated against the bar, and Tamsin picked it up. A text from Nadia.
