Chapter Twelve

Tristan clutched Mel’s hand in his, afraid that if he let go, even for a second, she’d run. Not that she’d get far in those sexy as hell heels she was wearing. But she had that look. One he’d never seen before. Like she was about to bolt. And it terrified him. He glanced back at her, her face bathed in shadows and the dim light of the street lamps. She kept her eyes focused on the pavement, like she was ashamed. Tristan wanted to punch something, but he forced himself to keep moving as he all but dragged Mel towards Riverside Park.

When they reached the edge of the park, Mel yanked her hand from his and he finally came to an abrupt stop, his heart pounding wildly in his chest. When he turned to look at her, she was staring at him, her lips parted like she was about to say something but then thought better of it.

Tristan cursed, unable to believe how stupid he’d been. When Amanda showed up, he should have told her to leave. He should have told her that he was done with her. Because he was. They were over and they had been for years. There had never been a moment of doubt.

Instead, he’d invited her in and opened a bottle of wine. Thoughts of Mel had him thinking unclearly and he’d actually found himself thankful for the company. He thought they’d be able to catch up, as old friends. And he’d been surprised to realize just how easy it was to talk to her, even after all that time. There had been a time when Amanda was the most important person in his life and talking to her, he could remember why.

But seeing the pain in Mel’s beautiful eyes, he realized just how much of a mistake it had been. Mel had made it clear at the train station that she felt uncomfortable with his relationship with Amanda. She may not have said it, but he’d seen it in her eyes. And if he’d been thinking clearly, he would have told Amanda to leave.

Mel pressed her lips together and collapsed onto a park bench, her face crumbling. “Are you sleeping with her?” she whispered, her voice so quiet Tristan almost didn’t make out the words.

“No!” he shouted, startling an elderly couple taking their dog for an evening stroll. Tristan gave them an apologetic smile and then turned back to Mel, his voice softening. “No. Jesus, Mel. No. Absolutely not. How many times do I have to tell you, you’re the only woman I want? Amanda stopped by to talk about work.”

Tristan could feel Mel’s eyes on him as she tried to decide if she believed him. She sighed, unballing her fist, and he caught a glimpse of the red satin crumbled in her hand and it broke his heart. He came to sit next to her, his hand covering hers, closing her fist with his.

“Mel, how could you possibly think that I’d ever want to be with someone else?” Tristan couldn’t mask the hurt in his voice.
