When Miranda staggered in the kitchen door, her father was already on the telephone. His fingers were white-tight on the receiver. Tears stood in the corners of his eyes. “Wait a minute,” he said. He covered the mouthpiece and looked at Miranda. “Where have you been? You’re all dirty.”

Miranda realized little bits of the marsh were dropping off her onto the kitchen floor. “Is that the doctor?” she asked.

“Yes.” Richard’s voice cracked. “She’s …”

“I know.” Miranda leaned against the sink, not sure whether she wanted to wash her hands or throw up.

“Go get Ariel,” he said, then spoke into the receiver again. “Yes, I’m here, I’m sorry. Should I come down now?”

Miranda turned on the tap and put her hands under scalding water. “I want to go, too.”

He shook his head, but Miranda decided she was going no matter what he said. She dried her hands on a paper towel and went to the guest room. “Ariel?” she called from the doorway. “Grandma’s dead. She died.”

Ariel sat up, sweeping her hair back with one hand. “What?”

Miranda sagged against the door frame. “Grandma died. She just died. She’s dead. Grandma’s dead.” Shut up, you sound like you’re going crazy. Miranda stared at the floor, feeling paralyzed. She heard the rustling of Ariel getting up and then felt herself in a warm tangle of arms and nightgown and hair. She swayed on her feet.

“Hey,” Ariel said. “Do you want to sit down? Where’s Rich? What’s going on?”

“I’m okay.” Miranda pushed her stepmother away and slid toward the bed, managing to sit just before her knees buckled. “Dad’s in the kitchen. On the phone to the doctor.”

Ariel rushed off. Miranda toppled on her side and pulled her knees up for her second wave of crying. All she could think of was Adam—how she wanted to reach for him right now, the way a scared baby reaches for a blanket.
