Two gift boxes wrapped in silver sat on the taupe hotel duvet. One was broad and flat. The other was the size and shape of her palm. Slightly buzzed from adrenaline and the glass of champagne, Lola excitedly grabbed the smaller box and carefully removed the giftwrap. Inside was a red leather jewelry box emblazoned with the Cartier logo.

She lifted the lid and caught the glitter of white diamond earrings. Each earring was made of two enormous stones—a round stud with a pear shaped diamond dangling from it. She knew nothing about gemstones, but these must be several carats each. They were decadent and gorgeous and totally not her. She didn’t want to love them, but they were so beautiful she couldn’t tear her eyes away.

She could barely set them aside long enough to open the other box. Its heavy cream lid bore the logo of a French lingerie brand. Her pulse quickened as she lifted gold tissue paper to reveal an exquisite, skimpy white lace bustier and matching garter, along with sheer white thigh-high stockings. She pulled out each silken item and laid it carefully on the bed, realizing the expected panties were missing.

She peered inside the box and noticed an envelope with her name scrawled in Nolan’s masculine hand. She removed and read the note written on thick card stock.

She wriggled her feet back into her high heels and carried the diamond earrings and her lipstick to the full-length mirror. The diamonds glittered whitely in the dim recessed overhead lighting, and her engagement ring flashed as she fastened the earrings to her ears.
